The driver who tragically died in a crash between a truck and a ute north of Batemans Bay last week has been named as a serving police officer.

A NSW South Coast Police District spokesperson said it was “with a heavy heart” that they announced the death of Detective Senior Constable Carl Wilkinson.

The father-of-three was killed in the two-vehicle crash at East Lynne last Thursday (28 November). He was just 37.

“[He was] an intelligent, diligent and very likeable man who was passionate about being a police officer and keeping the community safe,” the police spokesperson said.

“More importantly, he was a beloved son, brother, partner, father and friend.

“The shock of his untimely loss is being felt deeply by those left behind, none more so than his family. Carl leaves behind a partner and three beautiful young boys whose lives have just changed forever.”

The police spokesperson said Detective Senior Constable Wilkinson was a dedicated and highly regarded officer who had served the community well since joining the police force in 2009.

He then joined the South Coast Police District in 2017 and spent time in general duties, the proactive crime team and criminal investigation as part of the Batemans Bay detectives office.

“Our thoughts, prayers and support are with his family, friends and colleagues,” the police spokesperson said.

“A life of such promise left unfinished. Thank you for your service.”

An online fundraiser has been launched for Detective Senior Constable Wilkinson’s partner, Maddie Cox, and his three sons, which has led to an outpouring of tributes.

“My brother in blue, rest in peace, a gentleman and a great man. Was a pleasure to have known and worked with you,” one person said.

Another said: “It is hard to reconcile the loss of such a genuinely beautiful person who did so much good in this world. Sending our sincerest condolences to you Maddie and your beautiful boys, we are deeply sorry for your shattering loss.”

A third said: “Sending lots of love to you and your family at such a difficult time. We are completely heartbroken. It was a privilege and honour to know Carl.”

Last week, police said emergency services were called to the Princes Highway at East Lynne, north of Maidens Road, about 30 km south of Ulladulla, about 1:30 pm last Thursday over reports of a truck and ute crash.

Police said Detective Senior Constable Wilkinson, who was driving the ute, died at the scene.

The 57-year-old male driver of the truck was not injured in the crash and was taken to Batemans Bay Hospital for mandatory testing, police said.

Police began an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident and urged anyone with information or dashcam footage to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

“A report will be prepared for the information of the coroner,” a police spokesperson said.

The Princes Highway was closed for several hours at East Lynne after the crash.
