What would you do?

Living in my street, I tend to notice who does what, and the neighbours and the gossip factory are well established.

One of the people in our street, a young lad, has been working for a real estate company. He’s got a flash new car.

He lives at home, with mum and dad, we all know that. Dad is a doctor (GP). The whole street knows that.

The young lad is a fit fellow. We all see him.

What disturbs me, is that I see his flash new car parked in Tuggeranong in a disabled car park every day only a few metres from the real estate agents office front door.

This raises several questions, of which I am disturbed, but of course do not know the truth :

– Does the son have a genuine disability (not that I, or the gossiping neighbours in our street have ever, ever noticed)?
– Has dad, in his capacity of a GP rorted the system and gotten a disabled sticker for the son, such that he can avoid paying for parking like the rest of us do?

Nobody in our street likes the family. Their house is a brothel, it is literally a pigsty. Old broken car park, unkempt lawns, sheets for curtains. Yes, this is the house of a family GP and family. To see it, you’d say ‘Oh my gawd’. So from that I reckon the father, the GP, really couldn’t give a sh-ite and thus a dodgy disabled sticker wouldn’t even worry him at all.

So, what would you do?

Nothing?
Confront the kid?
Confront the dad?

UPDATED: Vic Bitterman has admitted that he jumped the shark in this case with the following statement made in the comments:

I have just spoken with [Name supressed] on the phone. I was out of line and I apologised. I will make amends. My learning point, as I said before, is to mind my own business and not jump to conclusions.

I threw up all over my keyboard at work once – not pretty! My poor, poor work-mates (they were much greener than I was!). Also threw up in numerous shopping centre bins, all over myself in the car, on my husband once and in the bushes just outside my house on more than one occasion! Gotta love pregnancy!

You’re hilarious Granny!! I doubted anyone would pull me up on it anyway, with the green face and the dash towards the centre!

Well, at that stage you kind of were the pram!

*chuckle*

dragonflygal1:11 pm 06 Mar 09

That’s it Granny – makes sense really! And given you can’t be booked for parking in those spaces, I’d say if the disabled ones are full then people with a disabled permit could park there anyway.

I parked in a parents with prams spot once at the beginning of my pregnancy due to having morning sickness and wanting to make it to the loo!

Yes, that’s what I thought they were for – the safety of the child being put into the pram. Otherwise you have to put the pram behind the car where it may be hit by traffic in the car park while you are getting other kids out, locking doors etc.

Yeah its mostly belco that I was ranting about. The spots are also in weird positions.

dragonflygal12:55 pm 06 Mar 09

I used to joke that there should be parking for parents WITHOUT prams!

The way I understand it, the parents with prams parking is more about giving them a slightly larger spot so they can get bub in and out easily, and also for parents with toddlers, parking slightly closer to the entrance makes it safer – less cars to deal with in getting in and out of the shops.

Belco mall doesn’t make sense to me – the parks for parents are the same size as all the rest, whereas Canberra Centre they are bigger to allow room to get bub in and out.

ant said :

It’s all very well to have rules about this stuff, but my point is, are they good rules? Do we agree with them?

Yeah lets not go there, it will just get me started on parents with pram spots, and senior citizen spots (which I am less against). Since when is a child a disibility? And if you are going to cart them all around the shop, how does parking closer make it any eaiser? What about people who are unable to conceive, what do they get? A gross reminder of their own shortcomings if they park in one and some big fat yuppie in his child killer comes up and yells at them, eventhough they got a park even closer?

I think i have gotten started….

Not all ‘disabled’ people look disabled. I have a friend with Crohn’s disease who has a sticker because if she can’t park close to the entrance and near to where toilets are…well I don’t have to go into any further detail.

I saw a sticker on a car the other day proclaiming “Frangipani Stickers on Cars: Australia says No”.

Soap and water, Qbn Gal! Soap and water!

Agreed, ditto for Eureka stockade flags, and “Playboy” bunny stickers.

What’s wrong with frangipani stickers? Helps this girl find her car easily.

It’s all very well to have rules about this stuff, but my point is, are they good rules? Do we agree with them?

The morning after I tore my achillles, I was in agony and just shuffling slowly was agony. However, by the arvo I’d found a Dr, got some crutches, and was quite happy. Didn’t need to be parked closer to anything after that. same when I had my shin splints operated on. With crutches, I was quite mobile. The wheelchair I’d been in after the Op was another matter, that was a nuisence.

The point has also been made that not all PWD “need” a special spot. It is assessed on need, not the mere fact that they have a disability. Id’ regard ladies in those 8-inch heels as mobility-impaired, for instance.

This topic has raised some very interesting questions.

I think you get four times the specified time, Kods. So if it’s a 15 minute zone you get to park there for an hour, eight hours in a two hour zone etc.

I respect disabled parking spots and would never, ever use one. Now, it seems I have been “entitled” to use them over the years, but it never occurred to me and I still wouldn’t apply for one unless I became a PWD and with genuine need for a spot.

And dont’ get me started on the new thing where people with babies merit similar special parking. Ye gods. What is next, special parking for those young women who wear those ridiculous fetish shoes?

Ant, across Australia there is about 8 different sets of legislation surrounding disabled parking spots. I would say you should look online at the RTA website to find out the answers to any questions you may have. I am also sure that your local Govt shopfront would be more then willing to answer any questions you may have.

In the ACT there are most definitely disabled stickers issued to people with short term injury, but these tend to have an expiration date. People with disabled stickers are also definitely allowed to park in timed pay parking for free, and also I believe for as long as they like.

Again, I think that the best place to look it the RTA website as a starting point.

Vic if only you could have been passionate about minding your own business from the beginning. The fact the young man has worked hard to get a FLASHY CAR compared to your censored is none of your business & irrelevant to his medical condition & where he parks. I pity the poor people at censored where you work. Combine that with the fact it was NOT his father who recommended getting authority to use the spaces for provided for people with his needs again shows another need for you to mind your own business and spend more time on becoming a better person & not so much of a completely misinformed, jealous busy body!

Even better how about with all this spare time you have now by not being a busy body you can go around and offer to mow not only this family’s lawn but anyone elses lawn who are busy serving the society.

To answer the original question, I would mind my own business and do nothing. I certainly wouldn’t be posting liblellous/slanderous statements here on an open forum. Serves you right if the Doctor sues you.

I also object to the phrase “literally a pigsty”. That suggests that it is, in fact, a pig sty. Please reseve the use of the word literally when things are literally something, eg “he literally sprinted away from the disabled spot”.

Lol – Mr Evil and Jim Jones – the flowers have been dead since 1963 and the moths keep the house nice and dark. I think Vic should be renamed “Dorrie”.

While not commenting directly on the accusation made in the original post, I think it’s worth emphasising that the only person who outed himself here is [Name supressed].

Nothing in Vic Bitterman’s original post gave any indication of the man, the street, or for that matter the suburb.

Surely if he had been on walking aids, Vic would have noticed, and this post probably wouldn’t have seen the light of day.

Vic may have identified a user of a mobility permit that doesn’t actually qualify for the permit.

If he doesn’t met the criteria and be unable to walk more than 100 metres without great difficulty or pain and this is substantiated by the use of walking aids then he doesn’t have a case.

If the lad DOESN’T need walking aids, he doesn’t qualify for the sticker and Vic has sprung him.

Does he use walking aids?

Does anyone know?

No actually it hasn’t been proven that he is entitled to the mobility sticker.

In order to qualify for a sticker one of the follwoing must apply:

The person must be:

* confined to wheel chair;
* have lost one or both legs;
* suffer from chronic and seriously debilitating respiratory, cardiac, or arthritic conditions that affect mobility;
* utilises walking aids; or
* be permanently blind.

No one has stated that this chap uses sticks to get around which would be a pre-requisite, even for a temporary sticker.

Yes, I am new to this forum. This is infact my third post. The fact that I am posting in this thread does not mean I know [Name supressed] in any way as Mr Evil suggests (I have in fact posted twice before).

I do think that it is a bit much to suggest that someone has poor morals due to the state that their yard is in.

Speaking from experience I know that my own yard has been in a very poor state from time to time due to the long hours I often have to work (I am an early career scientist). I know that my neighbours are more understanding and as such would not post baseless accusations about my morals on a public forum.

I agree that the misuse of disabled permits is deplorable, but the author of this post should not have shamed the accused in this way without knowing the facts, whatever they may be. Clearly the author provided enough info to identify the person in question, which could amount to defamation (and RA would potentially be liable for publishing it). as for the original poster, you are gutless and if i were the young man i’d be consulting lawyers about suing you for defamation. questioning the integrity of him and his father without even knowing the full extent of the situation or even perhaps asking him about why he is parking there first is a low act. and to top it off you slag their house off in a public forum for no reason at all. i think at the very least you owe him a phone call to apologise.

puzzlepunk: So agree with you!

My wife was on knee reconstruction three before she got a parking sticker. And then it wasn’t because she needed to park closer exactly, but more that she couldn’t walk to the bus stop, and from there to work. She used it so that she could afford to drive into work, as you can park in a regular spot and not pay parking. I also only lasted a month or so, during which time crutches were being used.

“i was waiting for the hintons to get a mention. they have always been great people i have known, and i have never seen them park in a disabled spot”

Maybe being a mate he was a bit shy about having a dust up with an old lady about a disabled parking spot. It went to court and I’m pretty sure he got a conviction. It made the CT.

Break his legs – give him the excuse to use the sticker!

Nobody in our street likes the family.

Perhaps you have got hot under the collar for this very reason bitter man rather than that you give a damn about disabled people and their parking spots.

Surely someone with a temporary disability warranting a disabled sticker would be on crutches, or displaying the infirmity in some way? Take a movie of him playing football, then dob him.

So, if he needs a disabled permit because of his knee injury, then as a real estate agent how does he cope getting around all day showing clients homes in his portfolio?

Holy sh1t dude. No way.

Jim, known them since drinking with them at darcy’s den. i know far worse people in canberra….

(reading down further) And if it is in fact for a sporting injury, I’m in fact more disgusted, if anything. I’ve had heaps of those, and it never occured to me to try for a disabled sticker. It took me 10 minutes to shuffle from the carpark to my work building (and as long to get to my section of it) the morning after I’d torn my achilles, and while a disabled sticker would have been nice, they are for people with real, permanent disabilities. To use it for a sporting injury is cynical.

If the chap in questin has had a knee reconstruction he certainly would be able to legally have a Mobility Parking Sticker.

It does cover temporary requirements for limited timeframes.

http://www.rego.act.gov.au/assets/PDFs/Mobility%20Parking%20App.pdf

Personally, if you doubt it, report it. Just don’t judge them by the way they keep their yard, or their occupation.

Dob him the flap in! You know you want to. If you can’t see that he suffers from a disability, warranting a special car space, then chances are he doesn’t warrant a special carspace. Not all PWD get a carspace, only those with a specific need for one. and this is assuming he has some form of disability. which he possibly doesn’t.

Try keying someone else’s name instead. 😉

No worries Peterh. I suspect [Name supressed] won’t be able to drop in and confirm anything until his working day is over.

Here’s what I would do, I would consider the following –

a) Not all disabilities are visible.

b) Not all disabilities are permananent.

The OP obviously lives in Calwell and I know the person this post refers to. The ‘Fit’ young lad in question is fit because he plays a sport and sometimes sportspeople are known to collect the odd injury or two. This unfortunate young lad scored himself a knee injury that required a knee reconstruction. Hence he has a disabled parking lable for his car for a few weeks while his leg heals.

Seems fair, right?

What IS unfair is questioning his old mans integrity as a GP based on the state of the front lawn…

Thanks Loz anbd [Name supressed] for clarification. I have to say though, that I’ve had my right knee reconstructed three times in the past 20 years and each time I’ve required extensive rehabilitation. Never once following any of these operations was I ever offered a disabled permit by my surgeon or GP. It wasn’t even talked about. I’d like to think that even if I had been offered I wouldn’t have used it. My best mate is in a wheelchair after a major helicopter accident and I hate it when we go out and he can’t park close to our desination due to other significanly less diabled people using the spots. I know there are degree’s of injury but I beleive these spots should be left, where possible, for permenantly disabled people.

I hope ‘[Name supressed]’ recovers quickly and destroys the permit the moment he can walk properly.

I’m also not sure of wisdom of keeping [Name supressed] phone number in public view though. He seesm to be quite young and posting it here may not have been the wisest of decisions.

BTW – I wouldn’t judge people by the house they live in, regardless of their employment. Who knows, whether they invested all of their income in the stock market? or maybe they (like me) hate gardening?

gardening in my house ended with the drought. feel free to pick on me for my house, if you know where i live, i really don’t care..

oh, and Loz, i thought as much, but just wanted to see if benm23 could confirm.

any updates, vic?

Peterh – the other side of the story is @ post #11

Benm23 appears to be a legit.

So Vic we await confirmation or an apology.

Wow what a great town we live in.. Not only are some people quick to judge, but they then go onto the Internet and not only post BS about a person, but then feel the need to attack their family, as well as making more personal judgments- because they saw a front lawn- wow..

Then to top it of question the ethical standard of a GP.. That is sure to help recruit more doctors to Canberra when people use something as ridiculous as this to question their credibility..

An old neighbour challenged a disabled parker who did not have a sticker. She is very Dutch. Turned out to be one of the Hinton boys. A fracas insured the police where called. I believe he ended up in court on assault charges.

Be careful who you challenge because you never know what kind of turd will park in a disabled spot.

i was waiting for the hintons to get a mention. they have always been great people i have known, and i have never seen them park in a disabled spot….

The truth?
Damn
What a way to ruin a good whinge and a grapevine rumour at the same time. Spoilsport.

I am the young lad in question. There are 2 sides to every story

I’m happy to discuss your perception of things.

Alternatively, you know where I work and I am happy to talk about this in person also.

Thankyou

Hi [Name supressed],

for those of us who won’t be phoning you, what is the other side of the story?

Pommy bastard, if someone had boxed me in like your friend did (not that i ever park in disabled parking) but i’d engrave my name all over ever bit of panel on his car.

My apologies that last comment may have not come out right.

You never know who is parking. Leave it to the lovely parking inspectors to sort out or take a pick and post it on RA.

Also, remember that not all disabled people drive themselves and need to be dropped off and picked up by family – who get a disabled sticker for this purpose.

haha GOLD

Always be sure of the facts before confronting someone….

Heh, back in the UK I used to have a mate, an ex-para, who lost his leg due to a parachute accident. Despite his disability he was one hell of a fit and mean mother******.

He used to take great delight in “boxing in” people parked without disabled stickers in disabled spaces. He used to take even greater delight in confronting them. (He used to wear shorts displaying his prosthesis) His favourite line; “Yes I have boxed you in, and now I’m going away to do some shopping. I’ll be back just after the traffic warden’s been.”

Seeing non-disabled people parking in disabled spots sends me over the edge .. grrrrr – report him to the police.

Any way If you have a Disable Label for your car you don’t have to park in a Disable Parking space. You can park in metered spaces for a few hours at a time free.

He could have a bad back…And we all know what its like to have a bad back…Good one day , Bloody hell the next.

If it’s there often then the answer is simple, express your concerns to the relevant authority and they will check on it. Another way is to post the identifying info here and we can check it out for sport. 😉

Key his car – not for being parked in a disabled spot, but for being a real estate agent.

Does he just park there, or does he have a sticker on the car ?

As a person who has a disabled sticker for my daughter it certainly does bother me when I can’t get a space because somebody else has parked there.

I have also known people to rort the system. A friend had a sticker and, although a medical condition existed, they could and did easily walk the distances that should have precluded a sticker.

Nevertheless, I have been called on it before by other people with disabled stickers and it makes me furious.

I never use it when my daughter is not in the car, and I really don’t want to discuss my personal business with strangers. They are always appalled when they realise the extent of my daughter’s disability, but it is just another upset I don’t need in my day.

So, if you challenge it you might end up with egg on your face. However, if you see him often walking the required distance you may wish to make a call to the relevant department. It is really annoying when people cheat in this fashion.

Just report his vehicle to Motor Registry if you feel that he genuinely has no disability and is abusing the system, and his sticker will be confiscated. That will give his GP father something to think about. ha
