Stanhope portrait goes up on the blocks

By DT 20 April 2005 10

Seems our Chief Minister’s stocks really have taken a tumble. This has appeared on the allclassifieds website:

2x3metre portrait of Jon Stanhope, Chief Minister of A.C.T
Magnificent portrait of Jon STanhope painted for the 2002 Archibald Prize after the bushfires, is up for sale at a vastly reduced price. The painting is worth viewing. It features Jon against a black gloss background, and beautifully coloured, painted by emminent painter, P. van Herk. Orig. hung in the Canb. Centre for 9mths and a Deakin art gallery. Originally $15000; desperate sale $7500

What’s Your opinion?

One wonders if recent events might have prompted this fire sale.

Who would want a picture of a large penis?

In the painting, does Jon have a Latte in his hand????

Only one ‘m’ in eminent (sorry to be picky, but you know once a teacher…) perhaps the stencil could be used once more (‘performance art ?’) that may help lift the price….

Perhaps it could be purchased from the Canberra City Council’s petty cash float and given to young Aidan as a farewell present.

For $2.99 for a Clint’s can of spray paint I can fix it! In fact, with a RA stencil I could really fix it!

On a serious note, I wonder if it was donated to the owner or they bought it? The mind boggles like the eyes of Kermit the frog…

If they give me $5000 I may take it

THATs the one that was up in Cafe La Moda. Something about capturing the spirit of a great man facing the challenge of the bushfires. Or something. Makes him look like a disinterested saddo actually. WHich is a description that fits better.

Someone tell him he’s dreamin’.
