FWIW here’s my rules, in order of priority and importance, haha…

Aussie Rules = Footy.
Soccer = Football.
Rugby Union = Union.
Rugby League = League.

Simple.

Changing tack, I must point out how much it irks me that people refer to the game of Aussie Rules as “AFL”. No, that is the name of one league, not the game itself. One never refers to the game of Rugby League as “NRL”, or Union as “ARU” and certainly not football as “A-league”. Great result for the arseclowns in AFL house, but shit for the rest of us.

Are you saying I should ask for the ‘Association football’ to be put on?
I’m assuming that you’d ask for the ‘Australian (rules) football’ to be put on if you were in a similar situation? Or is it only ‘soccer’ fans who must now refer to their favourite sport only by it’s full technical nomenclature?

Association football isn’t my sport (Cricket is actually my favourite sport)- it’s the sport of billions all over the world, most of whom don’t even know that Aussie rules exists. And they call it football.

Not so, obviously. But, goalkeepers and throw ins aside, the ball is played by players with their feet. As opposed to handball, which is, obviously played with the hands, and all other forms of ‘football’ where the ball spends an awful lot of time in the hands.

In summary:
Football is football. It is not soccer.
Rugby Union is Rugby Union. It is not football.
Rugby League is Rugby League. It is not football.

I’m happy for soccer fans to call their game Association Football. That is the name of their sport, not football.

If they want to call it football, they can’t talk trash about everyone else calling their sports football either.

I’d just like to take this opportunity to point out that Aussie Rules was the first of the sports to have a codified set of rules, thus everyone else can bugger off… J/k.

Suck it up! Either phrase works, but in Australia, if you say ‘soccer’ then at least 100% of anyone listening knows what you’re talking about.

‘soccer’ emanates from ‘association football’ and steady eddie alludes to it being the dominant code – though of course they play rugby at a high level in the uk and in both france and italy.

the correct nomenclature for ‘gridiron’ is ‘american football’ (hence, ‘football’ – which is why the yanks also call it ‘soccer’), with the aforementioned gridiron being the pitch upon which the game is played.

but calling soccer ‘football’ here isn’t a bad thing, as we have our football codes here generally called ‘rugby’, ‘league’ and ‘footy’ or ‘aussie rules’ or ‘rules’, leaving the full term, ‘football’ quite avaialble and thus allowing easier and more collegiate dialogue with our global friends of the world game on the matter.
