Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Centre

When the GDE roadworks were happening and I detoured past this building twice a day, I often wondered what it was about. I thought it would be a nice location for a cultural centre where I could take young kids to learn about indigenous culture and history, and wouldn’t be hard for school bus trips to detour past while also visiting Parliament House and the National Museum.

as I understand from previous inquire about using it for a regular large group booking, there’s issues with “town” water also – ie, needs extension from Aranda – something like that anyway. So it’s a bit of a “white” elephant

The building is used regularly for training, presentations, functions etc. the people who run the multicultural festival run the venue as well. as to whether it meets the needs of the local indigenous population I will leave for them to comment.

I posted on this only a few weeks ago. The local Indig population were cheated by the ACT Government years ago – they were to have a spot on Acton Peninsula but a corrupt consultant talked them into taking a spot on that wasteland instead, on entirely spurious grounds. Absolute bummer for them. It’s a useless facility in an impossible location. They should agitate to get back on the peninsula were the building belongs.

Secret waxing business?

Can anybody tell me what the difference is between this Centre and the one next to the Nat. Museum? I’m just curious.

I walk my dogs in that area some mornings. It’s obviously used for something as there is occasionaly cars parked outside and some hippy types hanging about there.

It’s a fine location that could be put to good use.
