TAMS are getting word out on a pretty special way to find out about Canberra’s deep history:
Canberrans and visitors alike have the unique opportunity to experience local Aboriginalhistory and culture in the Murumbung Yurung Murra cultural tours which are led by Aboriginal rangers in the parks and reserves that surround the ACT.
“Canberra’s cultural heritage goes back thousands of years and our tours are a great way to experience that heritage,” Adrian Brown, Ngunnawal Ranger, ACT Parks and Conservation Service said today.
“As the weather warms and the year draws to a close, there are a handful of cultural tours left for 2013.
“One of our most popular tours is the Murra Bunan: journey to the mountains tour which will be held on Friday 8 November 2013. On this tour we will walk to Hanging Rock and teach people how to use local plants for bush tucker and medicine. We’ll then take the group to the Ribbon Gum Theatre for a smoking ceremony and to make body paints, baskets and rope using resources from the land.
“Closer to town on Friday 29 November 2013 is the Gubur Dhaura twilight walk in the heart of Franklin. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about the significance of Gubur Dhaura’s Aboriginal and European heritage, mix their own body paint using the red ochre that covers the land and brew bush tea by the fire.
“On the Mullian Dreaming tour on Saturday 21 December 2013, we will journey to the summit of Mount Ainslie to share the ancient stories still being told by the Ngunnawal people.
“The significant rock art site on the Gudgenby: where the waters meet tour offers sweeping views of the Gudgenby Valley and surrounding mountains. We will meet on Saturday 14 December 2013 to interpret the rock art symbols and their connection to how people of the area performed ceremonies, marriage, trade and lore.
“The Murumbung Yurung Murra cultural tours are a great way to see Canberra as the Ngunnawal people have seen it for thousands of years,” Mr Brown said.
