Revellers from last year’s Melbourne Cup celebrations at Thoroughbred Park were praised for their good behaviour with ACT Policing hoping for another well behaved turnout this year.
ACT Policing will have a high-visibility presence at Thoroughbred Park and around the venue and a strong presence in and around Civic and other licensed venues as patrons continue their celebrations.
Targeted and random breath testing will be conducted across Canberra.
Operational Commander Sergeant Jo Cameron is encouraging people to have a good time, but not at the expense of others.
“We are not the anti-fun police. We want the Canberra public to go out and have a great day on Melbourne Cup. All we ask is that if you drink, then drink responsibly,” Sergeant Cameron said.
“Plan your day, arrange to be picked up, catch a taxi or take an ACTION bus when you’re heading home – please help keep our roads and city safe.
“Police will be actively targeting motorists today with breath testing stations, but more importantly we want to ensure we do not have to manage a collision scene arising from someone drinking and driving.
“Think about the possible outcomes of your decision to drink and drive – not simply that you might get caught.”
There will be free ACTION buses running from Thoroughbred Park to the Civic bus station between 4pm and 7.30pm.
