Police Wrap - 7 May

1. Ainslie newsagent knocked over by dirty Charnies:

Around 2.55am a silver Hyundai Excel stopped in front of the shop located on Edgar Street. The vehicle’s lights were shone into the store front for about a minute before a man exited the car and took up a position near the entrance. The driver then reversed up to the store and nudged the plate glass window twice before it shattered.

Both men then entered the shop and attempted to open the cigarette cabinets but were unsuccessful. Nothing of value was taken before the men left in the vehicle towards the city along Cox Street.

Both men used balaclavas to cover their faces and wore gloves, with one wearing a fluorescent vest.

AFP Forensic Services attended the scene.

It is believed the vehicle used in the raid was stolen from Charnwood shops between 6pm and 1am last night.

Police are appealing for any witnesses who may have seen suspicious persons or activity around the Ainslie shops in the early hours of this morning to contact Crime Stoppers

2. Naughty North Lyneham Massage:

Police will allege the 44-year-old male offender had sexual intercourse without consent with the victim as he gave her a massage.

The victim attended Belconnen Station a short time later and reported the incident to police.

The alleged offender attended Belconnen Police Station last night and police arrested the Ngunnawal man around 9.45pm (May 6). Items from the alleged offender have been seized. He will face the ACT Magistrates Court today (May 7) charged with sexual intercourse without consent.

Police have issued a warning to members of the public that they assess the qualifications of a provider before receiving a massage, and would urge anyone who believes they may have been subjected to improper sexual conduct during a massage to contact police on 131-444.

For clarity on clients rights including this case.

The ACT Human Rights Office has the charter for health complaints including massage therapists.

Also every allied health professional should be a member of a professional association – in order to be registered for health funds and to qualify for professional insurances but also as a protection for them and their clients.

The 2 main ones for massage therapy are Australia Association of Massage Therapy AAMT and Australian Massage Therapists AMT. The Australian Traditional Medicine Society ATMS also provides professional registration for a wide range of partitioners including massage therapists. They all have strict codes of conduct and provide appropriate guidelines on informed consent that therapists must comply with.

If is a matter of sexual assault then it is appropriate to make a complaint to the Police.

I think sexual intercourse without consent is pretty clear cut.

I doubt the police would be interested if it had just been a thigh massage.

While my view may be ‘ignorant in its simplicity’, the above story (all 5 sentences) is quite simple, so it would be ignorant of me to form a full opinion of the story based on what Ive read. I simply stated that theres a grey area, and to different people it means different things. To one person a shoulder massage might seen as sexual assault, to another it might be seen as a relaxing gesture from another. Once we have the full story, by all means jump all over this guy, but until we have the full story its unfair of anyone to judge either party.

Dvaey, your comment was exactly what I encountered when I tried to report it. While I can kind of understand your view, it is ignorant in its simplicity. A massage is a massage. Sexual assault is sexual assault. There is a world of difference between the two.

Surely I’m not the only person who thinks theres a grey area between a stranger rubbing their oiled hands all over your semi-naked body, for an extended period of time, and ‘sexual assault’. Not that I’m discounting any rape happening, but without details its a bit hard to know the full story. What one person might interpret as a sexual assault, another might interpret as a thigh massage, and viceversa.

well yes….and the poor girl has paid this bloke for the “massage” (I assume?)….what a terrible abuse of trust…..

Exactly. The same thing happened to me a couple of years ago. It was horrific – in my case I was already in an extremely vulnerable position (the massage was supposed to be a deep tissue massage to help manage a back injury, as I could barely walk). I haven’t been able to go for a massage since, and it took me a long time to even go back to physio. The funny thing was, I was constantly asked ‘why didn’t you try to stop it?’ Is that a question commonly asked of sexual assault victims? Just because the assault occurred in a professional context does not mean that he was going to stop if I asked him nicely.
