The new Holder Early Childhood Centre has been shortlisted for a major building award, Minister for Education and Training Joy Burch said today.
The centre, which has now opened to families in Weston Creek, has been shortlisted in the 2014 Master Builders and Cbus Excellence in Building Awards in the ‘building less than $5 million’ category.
“After touring this centre, it is no surprise to me that it has made the shortlist for this award. It is an impressive building, and the YMCA is providing excellent services in the new playrooms and carer areas,” Ms Burch said.
The total cost of construction, including design work and landscaping, was $6.5 million. The centre has:
•10 playrooms providing 124 childcare places
•Extensive landscaped areas
•Programming and carer support spaces and
•Reception, administration, laundry and kitchen facilities.
“This state-of-the-art facility caters for all areas of Weston Creek, and also the growing Molonglo suburbs that are developing rapidly,” Ms Burch said.
“The ACT Government is continuing to invest in the Weston-Molonglo area through the new Coombs Primary School, which will open in time for the 2016 school year, and upgrades to Duffy Primary School over the past year.
“The Holder Early Childhood Centre will prove to be an important hub for the Weston Creek and Molonglo communities for years to come. I am proud to be part of a Government that invests in such education and care facilities in Canberra, providing the best possible start for our children.”
