The various outposts of the ACT motor registry were thrown into chaos a week ago by a software failure that means everything has to be done manually.
As well as not being able to renew vehicle registration or driver’s licences, driving tests can’t be booked, proof of age cards can’t be issued or replaced, registration for vehicles not previously registered in the ACT can’t be established, and pre-paid parking tickets or unregistered vehicle permits can’t be issued. So basically, they’re buggered.
However receipts for these things can be issued — in lieu of the actual sticker or card or whatever — and police have been advised of the problems.
Other non-transport business, like dog registrations, can still be carried out at all ACT Government shopfronts.
Urban Services chief executive Mike Zissler said he hoped the problem would be fixed today sometime but that he couldn’t guarantee anything.
UPDATE Steve Pratt has put out a media release demanding to know what’s being done about it. He says he was contacted by several of his constituents last week about the problems. If so, why didn’t he say something then? How come we’re only hearing about this a week after the system crashed?
