Around a quarter of a billion dollars is being planned to develop Kosciuszko National Park, but annual park passes are going to double. Just when you thought it was expensive enough to go to the snow – $190 for an annual pass by 2007, and $27 for a day pass (locals don’t have to fork out the extra cash, and that includes people from Queanbeyan, but doesn’t include Canberra…)
Only catch is to cater for an expected expansion of Perisher Blue, it will cost around $160 million in the next thirty years, a cost the state government doesn’t want to fork out. Roads and sewerage will be paid for by the new fees, as well as development fees by chalets.
On the environment front – more wild brumbies will be culled, they’re upgrading trails and allowing more horse-riding, and reconstructing some of the huts damaged by the 2003 bushfires.
It’s good to see more money to improve the park, but considering you’re paying $5 for a VB in a plastic cup up here, and the cost of everything is so bloody expensive, it could be a disincentive to come up especially for day trips.
