When I heard about Elemental, the new paleo eatery in Braddon, I was intrigued but also not in a huge rush to try it out. I’m a little bit over food trends, as they do seem to be everywhere right now.
However, I had heard health food store Naked Foods had opened in Braddon, and so last weekend my partner Mike and I decided to make a day of it. We planned to have breakfast at Elemental, followed by coffee at Barrio (also a new Braddon coffee shop) and a sneak peek at Naked Foods.
Saturday was freezing and I was worried we wouldn’t get an indoor table at Elemental, but lucky for us, there was one left – how perfect?!
We ordered coffee and looked over the menu. I was immediately confused – coconut cheese, protein bread and beetroot jam?! … Coconut cheese?!
I really didn’t know what to order, so I went with what I thought would be the safest bet: the naked cheese burger (a beef patty, bacon, coconut cheese and tomato jam with house pickles and fresh salad, $17). Mike ordered the Mexican baked egg (free range eggs baked with Mexican-spiced chicken, coriander, coconut cheese and harissa, $16).
I just have to tell you, our coffees were amazing and I have actually been craving an Elemental coffee since last Saturday.
Our meals came out and looked great. Mike really enjoyed his Mexican baked eggs, although, again, there seemed to be a lot of coriander. Is coriander a new thing? It seems to be packed into every meal we’ve had lately.
My naked cheeseburger was pretty good too. It’s a fabulous idea for those who don’t eat bread! My only thought was that it was probably a little too heavy as a breakfast meal but otherwise pretty delicious.
I’m glad we finally got to try Elemental. It’s a really great concept for those who are a little more health conscious, or even for those who just want to try something new like coconut cheese!
And in case you were wondering, Barrio is a great little coffee shop, I’m not really sure why it’s been coping so much flack about being a ‘minimalist’ café. Their breakfast options looked simple but delicious, I will definitely be making my way back for breakfast at some stage.
As for Naked Foods, what a fantastic concept! For someone who loves to make protein balls from scratch, I was in heaven; buckets and buckets of different grains, dried fruits, flours, salts and even chocolates. You might want to give them a couple of weeks to settle in though, they definitely have to work through some teething issues, like getting some baskets to carry all your goodies in and some instructions for what you actually have to do as a customer; I got to the counter with an arm full of bags and was sent back to write down all the codes – I was pretty frustrated. In saying that, once they’ve got it sorted, it’s going to be amazing!
Elemental is located at 54/30 Lonsdale Street Braddon and is open Monday to Sunday 6.30am to 4:30pm.
Barrio is number 59 of the Ori building (next door to Elemental) but I couldn’t find any opening hours.
Naked Foods is next door again at 60/30 Lonsdale Street and is open Monday to Friday 10am to 7pm, Saturday 9am to 5pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm.
