Weekend cafe hot spot: Barrio, Braddon

Last weekend I shared my experience at Elemental and mentioned that I also stopped in at Barrio Collective Coffee, a few doors up. I wasn’t satisfied by my brief check-in last week so decided to stop in for breakfast.

We sat down to look over the menu and I really wasn’t sure what I felt like. The menu is minimalist, so don’t go in expecting to get bacon and eggs, because it’s not going to happen!

I had remembered seeing a customer eating avocado on toast last week that looked really delicious. I found it on the menu – rye with avocado and togorashi seasoning ($9).

Mike wasn’t sure what he wanted so he made his way to the register for recommendations. As he was checking out the variety of sandwiches, I spotted what I thought was a home-made wagon wheel. I wanted it immediately. It turned out to be even better than a wagon wheel, it was a smore! And OMG, was it amazing!

Mike decided to go with a sandwich that was packed with ten different ingredients (I can’t remember how much it cost); from pickled cauliflower to olives and a bunch of different meats. It was so different but so very delicious. He ate the whole thing within a couple of minutes.

My avocado on toast was pretty yummy. I don’t know that I’ve ever had togorashi before, but my understanding is that it is like a chili powder but more peppery. Barrio really is a minimalist café but you know what, I really like it. Sometimes less is more.

The coffee was really good too and what I really liked more than anything is that for a small café, it wasn’t too busy; there is enough space between seats to be comfortable.

I really recommend Barrio, it’s a cool little spot, bringing something a little different.

Barrio is located at number 59 of the Ori building.

I actually didn’t get coffee on this occasion but have had coffee from these guys before and agree that it’s very good.

… and the coffee?? Thats the best bit about Barrio – some of the best coffee in Canberra!

These guys deserve all the success in the world. They are some of the nicest, and knowledgeable people in the business that aren’t about hopping on trends to make a dollar, like one of the newest spots that have opened up in the area.
