Redex - Starts 16 November 2009

Another 45-50 minute route, remind me what’s new and improved? It will be alright for those not travelling too far along the route, otherwise it’s practically more of the same.

Just to add to my post, most public transport networks have trunk routes (intertown) & feeder services. The feeder services converse the country side & take people to the bus/trains stations to change to the trunk services. Once Casey Group Centre opens, Ngunnawal/Nicholls (where the 51 went) services will terminate in Casey.

There are plans for a Park & Ride at the intersection of Flemington Road & Wells Station Drive.

The 56 & 58 are the intertown service (of sorts) to Belconnen. The bollards would tell you this & if you were unsure ask a bus driver (they don’t all bite). ACTION did propose a Route 50 that would run the shortest route from Belconnen to Gungahlin. But the final network last year this route disappeared.

I love the idea of Redex and will use it, but seems a bit odd to me that the ACT Government hadn’t done anything to try and create a proper ‘park and ride’ area somewhere around the Gungahlin Town Centre, where would be commuters could leave their cars.

Most of the parking around is three hours or less, with the exception of a few rows in the two underground car parks and the car park diagonally across from Emergency Services Centre.

I think it sounds a lot better than my experience with Gungahlin bus routes today. I had to take my wife (who is Japanese and pregnant) out to her female doctor in the Gunghalin town centre. Bus Route No.5 was a breeze – 20 minutes, almost a straight line.

But to then get to work in Belconnen? I had no idea which suburbs which bus would go to, so I jumped on the first one that said “Belconnen” on the front of it – Route 51. But it gets better – this afternoon, I needed to check out a rental open house in Palmerston. This time I looked (although not closely enough, busy day at work with so many away) at Route 56, which seemed to go right past the street I wanted – wonderful. Ended up in Gungahlin thoroughly confused. I asked the bus driver on the return journey (route 56 again) who said that it went via this area on it way to Civic. What the?

is the PDF outlining it – up one side of the suburb and down the other. On the plus side, the 35 minute bus ride to get near it has happily ruled out any thought of living in any of Gunghalin’s suburbs for me.

If the ACT Government repeat this type of planning incompetence in the Molonglo Valley I will happily tie myself to the bulldozers to stop it.

I really hope the community will get behind it.

I am going to try to get into the habit of parking at the marketplace and taking the Redex the rest of the way into Civic.

(I wanted them to call it the Bunyip Express, but they weren’t up for that I’m afraid ….)

I think it would be great if the department promoted it within the local schools so the kids would get enthusiastic and tell their parents about it. They could really enjoy an inaugural ride as an excursion perhaps. Then they could do some cool stuff at Kingston and take the Redex home again.

This service is an absolute joke!!!

I currently catch a 51 from Ngunnawal Primary School @ 7:14am and get to the city @ 7:45am. If I catch the new 727 REDEX service from Gungahlin Market Place @ 7:16am I will get to the city at 7:46am. I save 1 minute. Whoopty-do.

I currently leave home at 7:10am to catch the 51 and will need to leave at the same time to get to the Market Place to catch the 727 @ 7:16am. So for the saving of 1 minute, I’ll need to start driving my car and pay more in fuel each week or catch the 6:45am 51 and stand at the market place for 20minutes.

What a bunch of morons! This trial is already doomed before it starts!

This service is very much in line with what we have been promoting via our submissions and discussions on public transport (except of course that buses have to still mix it up with traffic congestion). So it is good to see and we will be working to promote the service in Gungahlin to ensure it is that much harder to stop it when the trial concludes.

One idea we floated when Action presented the trial to our October meeting was that we would include free tickets in our next Gungahlin Smokesignals newsletter – that will be almost 18,000 copies and should ensure a quick take-up.
