Best of Canberra callout: Running routes

Melbourne has the Tan, Sydney has Centennial Park and here in Canberra, we have Lake Burley Griffin.

But the popular Bridge to Bridge track is just one of dozens of options when it comes to heading out for a run, as I learnt when I joined a running group that meets in a different part of town every week.

We’ve traversed the base of Mount Ainslie, circled Lake Tuggeranong and Lake Ginninderra, zig-zagged down the hill at the Arboretum and up again, toured the tracks at Stromlo Forest Park, jogged through Westbourne Woods and explored Fadden Pines to name a few.

The great thing about running is that you can put on your shoes and run just about anywhere you like, anytime you like, but I reckon the best routes are those that offer people-watching as well as scenery, and that make it most convenient to run with a friend or colleague.

The best time to start running is now, with autumn arriving this time next week, and the Australian Running Festival 45 days away.

Whether your aim is to make it around the Lake without stopping, to run the half marathon at the Australian Running Festival in April or to run 200km during the March Charge, we’re keen to know where you’ve been running and why.

So, do you have a favourite running route? Let us know in the comments below and I’ll get out and test them this weekend before selecting the Best of Canberra.

Thanks, everyone, for the suggestions. I had a virus over the weekend so couldn’t test out any of your recommended runs, but will do this coming weekend and publish the Best of on Monday.

Bummer – I was wondering why no-one’s comments were being published!

Recently moved to within 500m of Lake Ginninderra – and it’s magic in the morning.

Would also recommend both the Ginninderra and Yerrabi 5K Parkruns.

On path when fit, west basin is great. Away from the crowds, somewhat flat and good scenery.

Trail- back of hawker, from Kingsford smith/belco way intersection. there’s a nice fire/horse track that takes u to the pinnacle, mt painter, aranda bushland and black mt reserve. The showpiece for seeing Canberra is the ‘carousel’ route just below black mt tower.I think only about 2km. 360 views of Canberra from just below the summit of black mt. An undulating track with a somewhat obscured view but Gd. U need to get up to get on it so either drive up or for a work out link the run from the back of botanic gardens/Csiro or for a longer run from bindubi/caswell drive – many tracks will take u up once ur in black my reserve!

I’d rather not drive-run-drive if I can help it, so my favourites are all near my house 🙂 A gorgeous 5k (hilly!) loop around Duffy, 6k around the base of Narrabundah Hill (or over it if the mood strikes), or Cooleman Ridge – the Eastern side is stunning, and the Western side is beyond compare, and on a sparkling frosty winter morning it’s just me, the kangaroos, the views (and goretex shoes!).

I’ve started going to Tuggeranong parkrun (that does require driving!) and it’s a lovely run with an amazing atmosphere – lots of people watching for you Charlotte – and I’m sure Ginninderra and Gungahlin parkruns are equally fantastic.

I’m working on my distance because Weston to the Arboretum would be amazing!

Lake Gininderra. 6km on the short track, 7 1/2 on the long track. Plenty of scenic views, not too much foot traffic.

Bush running is one of Canberra’s great strengths. The fire trails around the base of Mount Ainslie and Black Mountain are lovely, with the mature eucalypts providing shade in summer, and lots of wallabies and roos to keep you honest. A spacious, leafy urban setting and lack of traffic congestion mean that street runs in Canberra’s established suburbs are also very pleasant. Canberra is one of the world’s best running cities!

I like the Lake Tuggeranong loop. Just a bit further than the bridge to bridge and you can stop at Maccas for a post run meal (if so inclined)
