Already been answered, but as an extension, I surely hope the ACT government DOESN’T subsidise the cross-border trip. People move to Queanbeyan because of the ‘cheaper cost of living’ and those who work in Canberra, move there knowing full-well about the travel time/distance involved. If those residents decide not to live in the ACT and pay taxes imposed by the ACT government, I see no reason what so ever that the ACT governemnt should subsidise their travel. If someone decided to work in Murrumbateman or Yass, should the NSW government subsidise a bus from Civic to their town?

Sure, parking only costs $50 per week, and the day you invent a vehicle that gets from Queanbeyan to Canberra on air/water, thats all the civic trip will cost. Unfortunately, a lot of current vehicles require fuel to move, and that fuel costs money. Do you think you can drive from civic to Qbn everyday for $30 a week? What about the costs of registration, tyres, etc too?

If you want to pick on anyone for not supporting Deanes, feel free to ask Queanbeyan Council to throw some money Deanes’ way to cover the costs of residents who want to work across the border, or (worse) interstate residents only coming into queanbeyan for their jobs. As for civic parking, Id take a guess that only a small minority of vehicles in the city are Queanbeyan residents, especially when you consider the sums above, and how much cheaper it is to catch Deanes than drive yourself.

That’s what a bus trip on an ACTION bus would cost if the ACT Government did not subsidise 70% of the trip. The fares set by Deanes would cover the cost of running the services and provide them a profit margin, the same with any other business. It’s not the fault of Deanes that the NSW Government does not contribute to the cost of public transport for those living across the border.
