Okay Rioters,
It’s that time of year again…..I have been a sporting parent for a few years now. Over the past five or so years, the Kukuette has been playing in a team that has run the spectrum of poor (OMG they scored – oops, no, an own goal doesn’t count) to premiers. Since the team started playing together (when they were 6) they have pretty much remained a team. Newcomers have stayed with the team. The parents have welcomed the newbie parents and arranged BBQs and get togethers. Our parents (loud as they may be) even applaud the other teams goals). In all I think we have been very fortunate to be a supportive group and really try to teach the kids about sportsmanship.
So, this week my child tried out for an ACT sport trial where I happened upon some parents whose children were trying out for the same team. Now I understand about vicarious sporting parents, but U11? Gee, give me a break? If someone says “Hey your kid is good’ is there any need to say “Of course” and then discuss loudly how the team would be better with children from a certain club?
Please, Rioters, help. I have been living in some sort of parental bubble. I really need some advice about parents who feel the need to live their non-existent sporting career through their child – and suck it up – or take a teaspoon of concrete won’t cut it unless you want to discuss my inappropriate reaction as reported by the Canberra Times.
