The Brumbies season hangs in the balance after the Canberra side went down to their major rivals Waratahs 24-17 in a penalty-filled encounter.

The Brumbies lost a scrappy and sometimes ugly Australian derby at GIO Stadium, putting their finals aspirations on a knife’s edge after just five matches.

The sides traded three-pointers in the first 20 minutes, and only Bernard Foley’s 50 per cent kicking kept the Brumbies in touching distance.

In front of 13,515 fans on Easter Saturday, the Brumbies were well and truly in the contest until the Tah’s 123-kilogram winger Taqele Naiyaravoro stormed down the wing for a try after the half-time siren sounded.

The Brumbies never regained the lead and were starved of possession as the Waratahs took home a vital win in the Australian conference.

The Brumbies will now host the Reds in Canberra this weekend in what shapes as a make-or-break game for the Brumbies’ season.
