The NCA has created a brand new website that allows people to feel like they’ve visited Canberra without actually coming here.
One wonders what Tourism ACT (or whatever they’re called now) thinks of this, as the site allows visitors to look over all the main places of interest without leaving their desk (or bed, where I mostly find myself using a computer).
The site is VERY Flash heavy (actually it’s all Flash…) and loading takes a while on my moderate broadband connection. I got bored of hanging round waiting for each segment to load after not too long, so I haven’t looked at very much of it.
The site opens with an introduction which you can’t skip in which two women (with bad posture) read you the text that’s next to them. The first explains about the site and the second tells you about the Regatta Point exhibition.
After this you can navigate through information, pictures and wildly scrolling maps of 21 locations in the Parliamentary Triangle (plus some of these have other locations inside them, like the different memorials on Anzac Parade).
I think it’s probably a good idea in theory, and it certainly looks spiffy, but I got fed up waiting for things to load and the maps started to give me motion sickness. But do have a look and judge for yourselves.
