Canberrans are being offered a new way to travel by road between Canberra and Sydney with the launch of the ‘Road Jet’ 24-hour service using private cars.
And the door-to-door service has the airlines firmly in its sights, with Road Jet claiming it involves comparable costs and travel times without the hassles, delays and cancellations associated with air travel.
It comes with a price tag of $350 per standard trip between Canberra and Sydney (and $250 return) but it becomes more competitive if extra people travel – with up to four people able to travel for that cost.
Co-owner Fiza Ijaz said that she and her business partner travel two to three times a week between Sydney and Canberra and had been struck by the high cost of plane tickets and frequent cancellations.
They decided to start an interstate ride-sharing company as an alternative, with the business starting up in the past week after being registered with Access Canberra in the ACT and Point to Point in NSW. It currently has 10-15 Canberra drivers and 30-40 drivers based in Sydney.
“If you are paying a premium price to travel out of a capital city or into a capital city you would think it would be reliable,” Ms Ijaz said.
“However on many occasions when we have travelled there have been flight delays and cancellations due to flights not being full or weather-related issues especially in winter months.
“As seen in a recent article Canberra airport was paying airlines on the Canberra to Sydney route $100,000 a month in a bid to stop cancellations.
“When you travel with Road Jet you pay for the price of one airline ticket and up to four passengers can travel,” she said.
“When compared to flying, Road Jet saves you time as you are picked up from your requested address, eliminating time wasted having to travel to and from the airport, having to check in an hour prior to flight departure, an hour flight, and added travel time getting from the airport to your final destination.”
Ms Ijaz said that the Road Jet service also saves time when compared to the bus service between Canberra and Sydney as passengers first have to travel to Jolimont Bus Station and then travel from either Sydney Central or Sydney Airport to their chosen destination.
Under the Road Jet service, passengers are picked up from their door and dropped off at their chosen location.
Drivers have had police and driving record checks and the cars used are family-sized sedans which were made in 2012 or later and have met safety check requirements.
The trip includes free refreshments and an optional stop for a maximum of 15 minutes.
Road Jet also offers a premium service with a luxurious vehicle such as the Audi above.
