I think this would actually have the reverse effect. In making them lose all that fat, the fat cells would be metabolised by the body, thus freeing up the carbon in the fat, which is the reverse effect.

I think you’ve got a little sidetracked here, how is sacking public servants going to make us carbon neutral? At best we’d just be exporting the problem to a jurisdiction with better employment prospects.

Breda, “what” and “why” are the questions that are being properly studied by dedicated professionals. You may have been mis-led by the Murdoch media campaign to confuse people. Remember Murdoch’s “Invade Iraq and we’ll get oil at $20/barrel”? Well, he’s dedicating his billions to lying again to those silly enough to listen. If you want to know about Climate Change, forget journalists and politicians, read what the scientists are researching:

Of course, since then things have changed: the IPCC projections were hopelessly conservative, eg, the sea-level rise is now projected to be closer to 1m by 2100, not 40cm.

As for what good a committee can do – what a silly question.
It is presumably a forum for clever people to share ideas and nut out detail which can be presented to the ACT government to help them develop programs.

The bicycling part would be positive. The rest would be another feelgood impost on punters by the we-know-what’s-best-for you crowd, paid for by taxpayers and those who can least afford it.

My comment relates to the utter futility of a bunch of people sitting in a room in Civic once a month to think up ways of making our energy more expensive. Because that is what they will be doing.

Jeez. You’d want a large appearance fee for turning up to those meetings….not sure if even then it would be worth it.

How about we start a business whereby we get a huge room, and fill it with exercise bikes connected to generators, connected to the electricity grid. We claim the feedin tariff as cash (ok, it’s a special case). Then, we open up a competition to the public to find out:
a) who can generate the most electricity; and

How about we just get a furnace, hook a turbine up to it, and throw fat people into it? Fat people are a renewable energy source, right?

They certainly generate a lot of heat – something we need think carefully about when considering global warming. I’m not really sure it would be renewable, though.
