Residents are still waiting to be allowed back into their Palmerston unit complex as police continue to investigate the suspicious death of a 35-year-old man.
Around 10:00 am on Saturday morning (5 October), police and paramedics attended a unit complex on Kosciuszko Avenue, Palmerston and found a man unresponsive. A 29-year-old male suspect and person of interest is currently in custody.
Detective Superintendent Mick Calatzis said police attended the same address on Friday night after reports of disturbances and arrested a number of people. It is believed the man died in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Detective Superintendent Calatzis described the deceased as a “well-loved person in the community”.
“Our empathy goes out to the family of the deceased person,” he said. “We currently have a person of interest in custody and he is assisting with our enquiries.”
Residents of the unit complex were told they could not go home as it was a crime scene.
“We are currently working with the community to find them alternative accommodation,” Detective Superintendent Calatzis said. “This is currently a crime scene. We have empathy for them and the last thing we want to do is leave them homeless.
“I have personally spoken with members of the community about those arrangements. Our main concern is to work strongly with the community with this tragic event.”
