Last nigh the ABC reported that the NCA’s much vaunted “Griffin Legacy” development plan has been savaged by the Walter Burley Griffin Society “because it goes against some of the architect’s fundamental principles for the capital”.
Surprise surprise.
Can we please accept that Burley Griffin was essentially sacked by the NCA’s predecessors in 1920. Not one of his building designs for Canberra was ever constructed, and the fundamental tenets of his plan have been comprehensively ignored since. The poor man must roll in his grave every time his name is trotted out to justify whatever the successors of his enemies want to do next.
In fact I would go so far as to propose that any plan for Canberra which tries to recall the ghost of Burley Griffin can be pre-emptively judged to be completely lacking in any merit of its own.
