There are nearly 700 Canberra bands with tracks on the TripleJunearthed website. In 2011 we’re going to explore them. (here’s the reviews so far)
Third off the rank, selected at random, is Afraid You’ll Fall who describe themselves thusly:
Afraid You’ll Fall began as “Surrender” in late ’04, but decided on a name change as “Surrender” was already taken by numerous other bands. A.Y.F have brought a mixture of heavy riffs and melodic singing to the Canberra music scene.
A.Y.F are currently in the process of recording and mixing their five track EP “Days of Parallel”, set to be released late September. A.Y.F are beginning to travel out of Canberra expanding their fan base throughout the east coast.
Genre identifying as rock/punk I have to say they sounded more like Emo/metal to me.

The Way That You Are:
Musically this could be old school 80s metal, but the vocals are melodic (for all that they’re sometimes trying to do too much with too little).
The musicianship and recording quality are top notch, but the songwriting’s a bit like, well, like every other band in this space.
Plenty of implied angst without much sense of why they’re so miserable.
Liar:
Ummm, more of the same really.
Overall:
AYF are not a bad band by any means. I’ll go so far as to say they’re damn talented. I’ll even go further and say that there are less talented bands out there with big recording contracts.
But on the basis of these two tracks they’re just not standing out from the crowd, despite considerable talent.
