The Canberra Times has a story on the transformation of the old Lyneham Motor Inn into “Lyneham Hall” as ANU again struggles to warehouse the influx of first years.
‘Lyneham Hall” will house a mix of 118 undergraduate and postgraduate domestic and international students and will no longer take private bookings from members of the public.
While the ANU is in the midst of a massive accommodation building project within its ANU Exchange precinct – which will eventually house thousands of students adjacent to campus – it has been forced to look to private hotels and motels on the northside to house its students under the accommodation guarantee.
The ANU already accommodates 24 students at the Carotel Motel and Caravan Park in Watson and 39 students at the Rex Hotel in Braddon. Last year 152 students lived at the now-demolished City Gate Motel in Lyneham. As with the other hotel accommodation, the Lyneham Motor Inn will undergo some building works to turn it from a motel into a student hall.
At $164 a week Lyneham Hall won’t be such a bad option.
