Myna subject

a Myna is still as much an animal as a peregrine falcon. Regarding an animal as second-rate could encourage acts of cruelty. If they are a pest, as they apparently are, then the Authorities should be doing the culling, not joe sixpack.

Our neighbour set a trap for these Myna birds – got about 40 over a fortnight.

Many of the biggest environmental problems are cute. I did a survey on community opinion and knowledge of a big problem species for SE Queensland – the Asian House Gecko. Most people love them and had no idea of the damage they were causing.
Another species of concern locally is the native Noisy Miner. This is the most agressively territorial bird in the country and drives out most other species from its colony area. With none of the little insectivorous birds left, the populations of sap suckers expload and dieback results. Farming and urban environments with canopy trees above and only grass below is where the miners inhabit. They’re a native species but their numbers are exploding and they are unintentionally killing our trees.
