croissant d'or meat pies

Croissant d’or has been occupying its space on East Row for as long as I can remember.

It’s a little piece of France in the middle of Civic, complete with not entirely friendly service.

But they know their pastries. As an aside their almond croissant remains my number one comfort food in times of crisis.

Today I tried their meat pies.

It’s $4.50 a pie and I went with the chunky beef and the lamb and rosemary.

Where to begin with these things? The pastry is the real deal, made with butter. But not so much that the whole thing becomes too greasy (just a little tasty bit greasy).

The meat inside is large chunks of tender, recognisable, meat with delicious gravies.

If you like a meat pie I can’t recommend these enough.

(For more sub $10 lunches in Civic check the tag, if you’ve got recommendations let me know.)

Quelle triste nouvelle, what a sad news!
Le seul endroit où l’on trouve de vrais pains au chocolat et des éclairs bien français!
The only place where can be found real chocolate breads and French style “éclairs”!
I am so sad. Let us hope the new owner will keep the bakery running, and keep the current staff…

Couldn’t have said it better myself.

All that fat and calories!

All that buttery pastry encased meaty goodness.

All that fat and calories!

No good pie comes in a foil tin; a meat pie should be self-supporting.

clearly a false statement… 😉

He’s got a point…

The first thought that comes to your head when you see a foil tin is runny hot gravy scalding your chin and hands.

Unless of course the pie has a suitable level of solid meat product – then you can make an exception. This looks like it’s one of those pies where you can forgive the packaging (so too are the pies from Elaine’s – they’re fantastic!)

you are forcing me to trail in your wake to review the vegetarian offerings at each place JB!

could you pretty please let me/us know whether there *are* vegetarian offerings for trialling?

Sad to hear that the place is up for sale as they make the best French cakes around. Also nice people once you get to know them

According to the sales advertisement the owner makes the bread and a pastry chef makes the pastries.

A bit sad because it is unlikely the new owner could replicate the “liitle piece of France in Civic.

Always found the service friendly.

That is bad news. I haven’t visited there in many years and in fact was pleased to learn it was still there. Maybe it’s just change of owner but the staff keep baking and making the good French fare.

Two pies for lunch JB!

Makes me think of this…

😉

Who ate all the pies?
Who ate all the pies?
You fat bastard,
You fat bastard,
You ate all the pies!

It’s where the $10 lunches are at!

Ok are you only reviewing places in the same square 200metres? Because every google view accompanying a review looks to be in the same spot. You need to walk further if you’re going to eat this kind of tucker.

Their baguettes are legendary too, and if they still make those small chocolate mice, buy one and you will enter heaven. Indescribably delicious.
