Chief Minister Stanhope has the thrilling news that he’s got another autograph, or rather the Mongolian Prime Minister, Mr Sukhbaatar Batbold, has planted a Siberian elm in the arboretum.
The medium-sized tree is native to northern Mongolia and other parts of Central Asian where it can live to 150 years.
Speaking at today’s ceremony, Mr Stanhope said this latest tree planting represented the growing international importance of the Arboretum.
“There are few greater symbols of friendship between peoples, and of hope and faith in the future, than the ceremonial planting of a tree,” Mr Stanhope said. “It is a great pleasure to join the Prime Minister of Mongolia to welcome our newest addition to the Arboretum – the Siberian elm.”
