In the 1980s, Canberra experienced a townhouse boom, and as with all property, some were beautifully planned and some were not. The home at 4/10 Vanzetti Crescent in Kambah is an example of a successful and well-thought-out and executed plan by Canberra architect Dominic Maiuto.
Mr Maiuto planned and built a single-level three-bedroom, one-bathroom townhouse in a small development of eight homes. Downsizers will find this home enormously attractive for its size, and as the home has no stairs, it’s perfect for people with mobility and balance issues, and will enable ageing in place in comfort and in a secure, quiet neighbourhood.

The home was planned, said Mr Maiuto, incorporating simple lines and generous proportions of glazing, maximising light and solar access to the living room and bedrooms.
“The internal room layout was particularly innovative,” said Mr Maiuto.
“The market at the time required separate kitchen and family, living and dining areas. Accommodating this in a small townhouse would often result in small constrained and compartmentalised rooms.
“I challenged this convention, introducing angled walls, which helped open up and better distribute the available living area. This also created interest and a more fluid layout and an angled kitchen design which was a real feature.”
The home has an open-plan kitchen and family room, with floor-to-ceiling windows drenching the room with sunlight. A dark grey feature wall in the kitchen adds interest to the room and creates a sense of peace.
The home also has a formal dining and lounge, with floor-to-ceiling windows looking out onto the garden, which has a lovely paved alfresco dining area under a blue-grey pergola. The garden is easy-care and lush, with hardy green plants and established trees.
The angles incorporated by Mr Maiuto make the bedrooms engaging and interesting, with the master bedroom providing a sanctuary. Bedrooms two and three are ideal for guests or family members, all have built-in robes and feature beautiful views of the garden surrounding the home.
The bathroom is neat and features two-way access with a separate toilet, and the laundry is also separate. The home has a large double carport with internal access and a storage room.
Home.byholly sales agent Bianca Way said the home will suit downsizers, first-home buyers and investors, and will go to auction on Saturday, 7 November.
“This lovely home has so many great features,” said Ms Way. “It will appeal to many people for many reasons.
“It’s ideal for a young family, but will also suit downsizers who are looking for a lovely neighbourhood and a home within five minutes’ walking distance of shops.”
“The townhouses in this development are very popular and tightly held. It’s a rare opportunity to buy a really delightful home.”
