A 38-year-old Watson man will face court on a series of driving charges, including driving with a two-year-old child in an unapproved child restraint.
It is alleged that at about 5:55 pm on Saturday (30 January), police on mobile patrol on Flemington Road, Harrison observed a Mercedes sedan accelerate aggressively from a set of traffic lights.
Police estimated the vehicle’s speed to be in excess of the 70 km/h signposted speed limit.
A short time later, police performed a traffic stop on the vehicle on Wimmera Street in Harrison.
Checks of police records revealed the driver to be driving while disqualified, and that the vehicle was unregistered, uninsured and displaying incorrect registration plates.
During the traffic stop, police also observed the driver’s two-year-old child in the rear passenger seat of the vehicle not restrained in an appropriate car seat, wearing only a lap-sash seatbelt. The driver allegedly could not give a lawful reason as to why the child was not secured in an appropriate child restraint.
The driver will be issued a summons to face court at a later date.
He will face charges of speeding, driving while disqualified, driving an unregistered vehicle, driving while uninsured, using numberplates calculated to deceive and driving with an improperly restrained child.
With school returning from holidays this week, parents are reminded to ensure that all passengers are wearing seatbelts and that any young children are travelling in an appropriate car seat.
