I’ve been entertaining a few international visitors, and they have told me that they would like to try Kangaroo, Emu, Crocodile etc.

Can anyone recommend some local restaurants/cafes with these items on the menu?

There was a place in Manuka, Ironbark something I think? but I’m not sure its there now.

Roo can be done well but Emu and Crocodile are rubbish, don’t bother with them.

I went there a couple of times and it was rather nice. Mu husband and I had tempura crocodile, roo fillets and emu as well. The emu was a tad tough but I loved the croc.
I just did a bit of a search and Ironbark has indeed closed. Pity. I liked it.

Yum Thai in Dickson had excellent crocodile last year. Our favourite dish was the 7 herb/spice crocodile, which tastes divine.

Really impress your guests by buying roo from the local supermarket and cooking it yourself.

Heaps of recipes on the Kangaroo Industry Association web site. Or you could try pretty much anything you would do with beef (keeping in mind the roo meat is very low in fat so will dry out quickly if you grill or fry it without marinating first).

We very very rarely buy beef in this household any more. Roo bolognese or Roosagna are just as good!!

We went here, http://www.museumsandgalleries.act.gov.au/lanyon/cafe.html,
a few years ago and had a great night. Roo, Emu, Possum, Rabbit etc.
Intimate dining, great service ( the chef/owner sat down with us for a chat) well priced.

Thanks for that tip! Looks great and very moderately price for that kind of fare. Can’t see emu on their current menu, but they do serve roo steak and fetuccine with possum stew.

Wilbur’s at Hackett had a lovely roo with sweet potato mash and beans on special menu. You could always ring and check if they are still serving it.

I did have roo at the restaurarant in Telstra Tower once, but that was 10 years ago. Used to be a fun place to take tourists to. Alto – as it is called – gets very bad reviews pretty consistently now though. And it is very expensive too, so sounds like pretty poor value for money.

Mmm, last time I was at Alto it was pretty good. Up there with some of the bigger city ala carte restuarants.

Man with a plan, if you get stuck you can buy the raw meat at the Fyshwick markets. There is a butcher out there that does Crock, emu among other things. As others have said, roo is readily availiable at the bigger chain stores.

Poachers Pantry all the way, the do smoked meats, wine tasting, nice surroundings and only about 10 mins out of town

Thanks for all of those suggestions.

Try Grazing out at Gundaroo. The menu is seasonal but ht e food there has always been spectacular. They normally have at least one Skippy dish.

Snap! They do: http://www.grazing.com.au/dining-menu.html

I had Kangaroo at Grazing a few weeks back at a wedding, spectacularly good.

I’ve never seen emu or croc on a menu here either. But I’m pretty sure you can buy at least emu at Fyshwick markets.

There are plenty of places that does roo, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen emus or crocs.

If they are that eager I’d recommend travelling to the Northern Territory and going on one of those Bush Tucker tours that are run by the local indigenous people.

Still a bit doubtful about the chances of dining on a croc though.

Not a resteraunt but I’m pretty sure you can get a roo steak at Magpies Club at Kippax

Flint restaurant prepares beautifully succulent kangaroo, however you might need to wait a while before they’re operating again.

The restaurant at the top of Black Mountain Tower did feature it on their menu. May be worth a phone call to check if it still features. Coles & Woolies sell kangaroo fillets – as is or marinated.

Yep get the kangaroo fillets from coles which are fantastic, or you can also get the marinated kangaroo steaks which I haven’t tried yet. I BBQ the fillets at least once a week then slice it up in a salad.

Delissio in Braddon has Roo on the menu and , from what I have been told, is very good.

I wanted to find out too now because I love kangaroo (both the hopping and the meat-on-plate kind). But barely anyone seems to serve it anymore! Too controversial?

The Boat House by the Lake has 1 kangaroo dish on their current menu: http://www.boathousebythelake.com.au/menus_intro.html Would be a very nice location to take guests from out of town to.

And I started going through this list, but didn’t get very far yet (and no luck with roo on the menu yet): http://www.boathousebythelake.com.au/menus_intro.html

Let me know where you end up going?

Doesn’t Poachers Pantry get into this kind of fare?

Having seen and read very recently some pretty yucky things about the kangaroo meat supply chain recently, I’d think twice about – at least in relation to eating the hopping one.
