A staple of the Canberra food scene for over 30 years, Sammy’s Kitchen has closed its Civic doors permanently.

In a message to the community posted on the front window of the Bunda Street restaurant, the Civic iteration of Sammy’s Kitchen has said its final goodbyes.

“Sammy’s Kitchen Civic is permanently closed. We are grateful for your strong support over the years. Please continue to support our other outlet, Sammy’s @ the Foreshore at 39 Eastlake Parade, Kingston. Thank you very much for your continuous support, and look forward to seeing you again,” read the message.

Rumours circulated that the Chinese and Malaysian restaurant faced a permanent closure late in 2021. Yesterday an online post was flooded with tributes for the outgoing Canberra favourite as those fears were realised.

Fans of the restaurant declared their love for what one commenter described as “one of the best restaurants in Canberra”, suggesting the impact on daily traffic from the pandemic and working from home may have contributed to the closure.

Booking at the Kingston restaurant can be made on their website.

Such sad and unexpected news. Have been customers for over 30 years. Thanks to Linda and Jay for your excellent service over many years.

Such sad and unexpected news. We have enjoyed Sammy’s cuisine (in civic) for over 30 years. Thanks to the amazing staff, including Linda and Jay.

The slow tram to no where, cycle friendly paths and continuous street works in the city and one of the anchors has set sail down south of the lake.

Not sure you can blame the pandemic, civic has been dead for years.

I suspect a large chunk of the blame probably lies with QIC. Look at the amount of retailers and restaurants that have cycled through or been forced out of the Canberra Centre in recent years. Sammy’s probably just the latest victim of that.
