DIfference between Canberra milk and Costco milk?

I have realised both canberra milk and costco milk are packed by the same company (Capitol Chilled Foods) and have exactly the same nutritional information label. However, the price difference is obvious.

I am certain that these two milk are different. Does anyone know what’s the difference between these two?

(Please, no comments on costco’s price strategy)

Or does anyone who is in the closed lab that can have a look at some milk samples?

THX.

Fast forward to 2016, I see Capitol Chilled Foods produces a brand called “Fresh Milk” with a label listing the exact same specifications as Canberra Milk but selling in the Belconnen Markets for $2.99 per 3 litres compared with Canberra Milk selling for about $5.46. Fresh Milk tastes a little different and produces more bubbles when you pour it in a glass. Strange how the specs are the same.

I’ve been wondering about Supabarn’s milk source. After we joined Costco, I saw that Supabarn were matching their price for 3L bottles, and started buying that. Label says it’s packed for Supabarn, which is of course very enlightening, as the Supabarn logo on the label didn’t quite confirm that for me (!), but I still would like to know who it’s packed by…

All cheap milks are the same. Packed with permeate. There will be variability for them season to season. If you want a nicer milk like A2, you’ve gotta pay for it.

I’ve tried all full cream milks and Canberra milk is my favourite (especially Canberra Gold, mmm).

Canberra Gold has extra cream added. There’s a few milks like that (fewer than there used to be, sadly) where they add a bit of the good stuff rather than taking it away. I like the organic stuff that hasn’t been homogenised, takes me back to the olden days when you had to shake the milk up before using it.

When Coles started up their ultra-cheap Coles milk thing, I stopped buying it, figuring they were probably rorting someone over it. costco sell their milk in containers too big for me, so I haven’t tried it.

Canberra Gold isn’t homogenized so it has a higher fat content. They only add extra cream to the Canberra Gold product sometimes in the spring when the fat content is low.

Also Organic milk means that the cows that the milk comes from only eat pesticide free grass.

Are you crazy? If you shake it, you won’t get that little bit of cream on your breakfast! Used to love taking the little foil cap of the gold top Glass Canberra milk bottles. 🙂

Tbh i dont think there is such thing as second grade milk. (you can certainly have second grade fruits), you’ll probably find theres no difference, apart from packaging & branding.

You better keep a low profile on Monday 🙂

LOL! Nah – I’ll be cycling by in all my lycra-ness waving a latte at them. 🙂

I found that as well. I have been drinking canberra milk for years because I believe you get what you pay for. I’ll be very disappointed if canberra milk overcharge customers for marketing over quality. It cost $4.9 for a 3 litter bottle at woolworth and I know its whole sales price is about $3.2 (could be wrong, I can’t really remember it).

Doesn’t Canberra milk come from all those dairy farms you see around Canberra? Hmmm, actually forgot they closed years ago, so for years our wonderful local Canberra milk has been coming from elsewhere. I recall at one point from farms around northern Victoria. Quite ironic acutally because at the time this is when the market was deregulated and other milk brands started to appear. Canberra milk was being market as local and other milk (Pura) as coming from far away, when in fact the Pura milk came from dairy’s much closer to Canberra than Canberra Milk did.

As to the difference between Costco and Canberra milk, I would suggest the only difference is the label on the carton/bottle. Same with most milk actually.

Not many things on the market can be call “local” or organic. For, example, many stuff you brought from the farmer’s market are the same in the super market.

So does this mean that when you’re told that the milk is exactly the same, from the same large vats, but that Costco negotiated a contract to get their milk cheaper, you will simply say “that’s wrong, I am certain that these two milk are different” until someone else tells you that the milk is exactly the same, from the same large vats, but that Costco negotiated a contract to get their milk cheaper, you will once again assert that ” am certain that these two milk are different” until someone agrees with you just to hear you say “I knew for certain that these two milk are different”?

Capitol Chilled Foods have made a statement that these two might are ” very similar” which means different.

On milk in general rather than this situation, there is a distinct difference between the Coles branded skim milks (two different packages – pink and white) and “name brands” such as Dairy Farmers. My homemade morning cappuccino froth immediately collapses when made with the cheap stuff. Proven time and again, and irrespective of starting temperature.

And no doubt there are some truck drivers who would wet themselves that I care whether my cappuccino collapses or not, but I do.

I would suggest your answer is provided by the following link:

To my knowledge, Capitol Chilled Foods is required to licence the rights to Canberra Milk IP from the Canberra Milk Authority (the ACT Government). So in terms of price, that and the typical brand name mark up would both be behind that.

As for what’s inside, Capitol Chilled Foods is a joint division of Bega Co-op and National Foods, the latter which also produces PURA and Dairy Farmers. But it’s manufactured in Canberra so it is a unique product in as much as milk from a cow can be.
