Labor MLA Chris Bourke has announced that the Construction Forestry Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) (that which owns the Tradies) is going to sponsor Special Olympics ACT Region.
Try not to snigger at the thought of Canberra tradies’ union dues paying for the special olympics.
But before you snicker too hard the ACT Government is also chipping in $18,000.
“Special Olympics ACT Region is an organisation which helps some of the most disadvantaged people in our community. The organisation provides year-round sports training and competition for people suffering from disabilities.
“This partnership could not have been achieved without the hard work of the Secretary of the ACT branch of the CFMEU, Dean Hall, the Chairman of Special Olympics ACT Region, Glenn Keys and the continued support of the ACT Government.
“I congratulate the CFMEU on their strong record of support for sport in the ACT, ranging from local community clubs to Canberra icons such as the Canberra Capitals, Canberra Raiders and Canberra United.
“The ACT Government has also allocated $18,000 from this year’s budget to assist with program development and the expansion of the Special Olympics’ cricket and swimming programs.”
