One item? Or two?

coke and mars

Last week I wandered into the convenience store in the Civic bus interchange and noticed they had mars bars stuck onto the coke bottles.

Wondering how it would work I grabbed one and was intrigued when the mars bar was scanned and charged seperately.

Fair enough? Or a bit dodgy? I’m not sure but thought I’d throw it over to you Rioters.

I would be inclined to take them over to the register and after the kid’s scanned them say you don’t want the Mars Bar. That way, the inconvenience of having to change the sale on the register and redangle the Mars Bar on another bottle, and possibly hold up other customers is a very slight punishment for their very slightly cheeky attempt to gouge more money from you!

Hehehehe, I was having this discussion with my wife while we were in Target one day. She was trying to stop the kids from tipping the Chupa Chup stand over & I was like “bugger them, if they want to place all this crap in the reach of kids while they are waiting in line then they get what they ask for”.

I know they all do it but Target have taken it to the extreme.

Did you seriously let your kid knock over a Chupa chup stand?

holy sh*t

No but I would not have cared. :), I hate pressure selling.

+1
So it’s fine that everything you buy comes in individually-packaged portions (anyone seen the boxes of single-portion liquid washing detergent you can buy now? …because pouring in the right amount using, heaven forbid, your own judgment is just toooooo much), as long as you put it in a reusable shopping bag?

The sense of entitlement of Working Families can still be quite confronting for normal people (and normal families, not Working Families).

The lack of ability to read of people on the internet, can still be quite confronting for normal people.. not to mention the ability to jump to conclusions based on the bits theyve just mis-read.

Now that is definitely a greengrocer’s apostrophe…

I walked into Woolies the other day to buy a tomato. It was in a big box with other tomato’s and because of the close proximity and the fact they were packaged in the same vessel I assumed that if I bought one I would get the rest of them for free.

Come on! Are some people not capable of figuring things out for themselves? If there’s no sign spruiking a special deal then there’s a good chance there isn’t one. Is it that hard to say to say,” sorry I thought it was a deal, I’ll just walk back over to the fridge and get a coke with no Mar’s bar attached.”

I love marketing targeted at impulse buying. I find myself saying “yes, I do feel like a Mars bar with my coke, and it’s even cold. Lucky they were together or I’d never have thought of that.”

I’ve seen some pissy complaints on here before but this surely takes the proverbial cake.

N.

Letter to the ACCC is in the mail!!!!!

The mars bar isnt functional without the coke.. if you just got the coke then it wouldnt stand up and the bar would slip out somewhere.

The fact it isnt marked what the deal is.. you would assume that the item is a single unit and charged at the listed price. (which should be for both). Else its false advertising..

I believe the sale price listed on items is the full price including GST its clearly one unit!

I fell for that one too once. I thought thought the Mars Bar was free, but then they charged me for it.

Being mild mannered, I didn’t say anything about it. I’ll just never shop there again.

Not so much JB’s original post, he was obviously just stirring the pot, more the flailing of grazed-knuckles he received in response.

If a mars bar stuck on a coke bottle in order to up-sell to the masses has this kind of effect on you, then for your own safety stay out of supermarkets.

It is a bit misleading if there are no signs (to indicate price, or a freebie). Just pull it off, and leave it on the counter.

ummm Mars and Coke are owned by the same company

Ummmmm. I think you could be wrong as I don’t think Coca Cola is in the confectionery business.

Ok then.
Coke vending has distrubuting rights to Mars brand products in Australia. http://www.cokevending.com.au/recognised_brands.asp
I assume that there are other such marketing deals between the 2 companies

I’ll give you that one…..

I think the Coca Cola company will have something to say about this as they generally don’t like cross promotion with other products. That’s why you never see any other products in Coca Cola shop fridges except their own.

Unless there’s a sign or label advertising a deal of some sort if you buy the pair, I think you could safely assume that normal price would be charged.

It’s called upselling, Jim, but not as we know it.

If it is the place that is in close proximity to you the I would say yes.

I would rather walk to Supabarn than buy stuff from there at their soper over inflated prices, they are worse than a service station.

I am so glad IGA opened up.

Call Crime Stoppers!!! Life Will Never Be The Same…Think About It,They Are In Business To Turn A Profit. Not To Turn You All Warm And Fuzzy With A Free Mars Bar.

I’d assume the mars bar was a present with the coke, like those things they stick onto the fronts of magazines. I’d not expect to be charged for it, I’d expect the price to be displayed for that purchase clearly. Because if I wanted to buy a coke and a mars bar, I could easily grab a coke, and a mars bar. so having the mars bar atttached to the bottle would say to me “free mars bar with this coke”.

Exactly!
And while I think the plastic bag ban is OTT I would like to see something done about stupid wasteful unnecessary plastic packaging like that ridiculous pocket attached to the bottle. Where are you Greens?

Does Nick know you’ve got his bottle of coke?

Slightly dodgy. I think they need to clearly specify that both items are at the normal price, or mention that its a “deal”, eg. get a certain amount off if you purchase both items as a “pack”

This has been occurring in service stations for a while now. There’s nothing better than a cold Coke and Mars on a summers day… Yes, I really am that fat LOL

I’d rather a Corona and a stripper, but that’s just me….

Seems fair to me. Even if there’s a special deal on the combo, they’d probably have to scan both for inventory purposes, and the computer would calculate the combo price.
