Drum roll please … Canberra’s best clubs have been named at the Canberra Clubs and Community Awards.
More than 250 Canberrans attended the annual ACT Awards that recognise and acknowledge the outstanding social contributions made by clubs in their local communities in Canberra.
More than 30 clubs were in the running for awards, recognising excellence in arts and culture, education, sports contribution, community wellbeing, diversity, sustainability and more.
“The outward-looking community-based perspective of the awards was well received and the story narratives of nominees and winners were seen by attendees as broad in scope, representational in terms of activities, and positive in terms of the community contributions they identified,” ClubsACT operations manager Kate Palmer.
“The awards highlight the high level of community engagement undertaken by the member clubs of ClubsACT and the broad spectrum of activities they are involved in.
“They also recognise individuals and groups contributing to the social fabric of the Canberra community.”
Kate said every day in Canberra, not-for-profit community clubs are out in the community supporting individuals and organisations that make our community stronger and more resilient.
“These stories are rarely brought into the spotlight, and we hope through these stories we can better promote the community club industry and its importance to the sporting, cultural and social life of our city.”
National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) Minister Bill Shorten was one of many special guests who attended the awards night.
“Community clubs are so much more than just a place to grab a drink or socialise – they bring people from all walks of life together, they help form lifelong friendships, and they can build a sense of community,” Mr Shorten said.
“It was great to be part of the ClubsACT Awards last night.
“Supporting people with disability, ensuring they live their lives with dignity and joy is one of my lifelong commitments,” Mr Shorten said.
“It’s fantastic to see organisations like the Vikings and Eastlake Group leading the pack and ensuring people with disability are included in sport and community.”
