We went with some friends to Jehangir at Holder shops on Friday evening, only to discover that it’s no longer Jehangir, but a new Indian restaurant sporting the curious name of “Tomatoes Curries and Grill”. Apparently they took over about three weeks ago, but have kept the old phone number.
Anyways, the six of us were pretty hungry, so thought we’d give it a try – and I can definitely recommend it. We ordered mango chicken, lamb rogan josh, goan fish curry, vegetable korma, and some dhal, as well as some samosas and butter naan. The samosas were nice, but nothing to write home about; the naan was typical naan (in a good way); and the dhal was pretty tasty too. However, the curries were just fantastic. The sauces were creamy and tasty, with enough kick (even the mild ones) to let you know that you were eating a curry. The vegetable korma was particularly flavoursome; however, the standout was the goan fish curry, which was made with salmon, rather than (as is often the case) some nondescript white fish. It was simply delicious.
They didn’t have mango lassi on the menu, but when I asked they said that they could certainly whip up a couple – some of the best lassi I’ve ever tasted. A hint of cardamom, but not enough to dominate the sweet and sour mango/yoghurt combination.
Anyway, for less than $20 per person we walked away feeling full and extremely impressed. Definitely worth a visit.
(And no, I don’t have any connection with the establishment, and will not benefit in any way from giving them a plug!)
