A couple of weeks back saw a rally by Queer rights activists in support of the ACT’s new civil unions bill. Since then there have been rumblings from federal Attorney General, Robert McClelland, over a provision within the bill that would allow homosexual couples to solemnize a civil union with a ceremony. Apparently marriage like trappings are only for straight people.
In response the Campaign for Civil Unions is calling for a second rally this coming Saturday (29th) outside the legislative assembly at 1pm. The purpose of this rally, to once again show those lovelys in ACT Labour that “we” support them (on this at least). There’s a copy of the poster for the rally over the fold.
Here’s hoping that Stanhope’s earlier willingness to take on the federal government wasn’t solely motivated by party allegiance.
