The roundabout at one of Braddon’s busiest intersections will be replaced with a raised treatment to slow traffic as part of the more expansive streetscape upgrades being undertaken by the City Renewal Authority.

The CRA says the proposed works at the intersection of Elouera and Mort streets will make it safer for pedestrians and improve connectivity in the retail and hospitality precinct, including making it easier to walk to the light rail line on Northbourne Avenue.

They include the replacement of the roundabout with a raised concrete intersection treatment that calms traffic and introduces four zebra crossings with less distance for pedestrians to traverse.

The verges will be widened, new lighting installed on each corner, new garden beds and trees established, and new paving and furniture provided.

The proposed design for the new treatment for the intersection.

CRA CEO Malcolm Snow said the upgrades to the intersection prioritise pedestrian movement to make it safer and easier to walk between public transport and local businesses.

“We’re continuing to make Braddon more accessible and attractive for residents and visitors,” Mr Snow said.

“By improving pedestrian safety and connections to adjacent public transport, we’re making it easier for people to enjoy Braddon’s shops, restaurants, cafes, and bars.”

Mr Snow said the community suggested the improvements to the intersection during consultation on the original Braddon Streetscape Program.

“Through the early consultation, the community made it clear that supporting better pedestrian access, calming traffic, and improving integration with the light rail were the priorities,” he said.

Construction on the intersection upgrade is expected to begin in mid-2024.

Consultation on the project is now open and Canberrans can view the concept design and provide feedback on the YourSay Conversations website until the end of Friday, 15 December.

traffic lights and ‘scramble crossing’, where there is a phase in the light sequence when ALL motorised traffic stops, including turning traffic, and pedestrians can cross in any direction, including diagonally

Braddon desperately needs more Loading Zones and No Parking zones. Places Uber drivers can legally pull over and stop in for 2 minutes for pick ups and drop offs. Eliminating a roundabout means freeing up lots of kerb space for more parking and other spaces – currently wasted on no stopping zones. Make the most of it!

Oh, and put in some shelters for rideshare passengers. You see more passengers in ubers than buses these days!

To Malcolm Roxborough: See https://www.accesscanberra.act.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0019/2228311/2019-Road-Rules-Handbook.pdf page 41. “The law says you must give way to … vehicles already circulating on a roundabout …”.

It’s not clear who will give way to who. Do the feint lines on Mort St imply stop signs for that street?

When the light turns green, you go, when it turns red, you stop. I think it’s pretty self explanatory.

I would have thought the next roundabout up would be the one to remove, in a far busier space for pedestrians. Give way signs or similar here (which I assume is the plan) will make what is actually a pretty busy intersection at times chaotic to say the least.

Sounds like changes made without actually talking to the traffic modellers to me.

Its amazing how northside projects can be announced one day and built the next. Down south they become rumors, then become election campain promises then forgotten, then remembered then go though several rounds of planning and extensions so it feels like they’ve done 10 times the projects but never really deliver.
