Police are extremely concerned about a man who has been missing from Canberra’s south for almost a month and have been combing the Tuggeranong area to find him.
Timothy (Tim) Lyons, 38, has not been seen or heard from since about 4 pm on 19 December 2023. He was last seen at his home in Gordon.
ACT Policing has already made two appeals for information about his whereabouts and spent weeks conducting extensive searches in Tuggeranong before they released pictures and spoke to the media on Wednesday (10 January).
Detective Acting Inspector Emma Quade said Mr Lyons’ disappearance was “extremely out of character for him”.
“At this point in time, we think that he may not have access to a vehicle or other means of travel, so there’s a likelihood that he was out on foot,” she said.
“We are still very concerned for his welfare and would like to check that he is okay.
“Tim’s family are understandably distressed about not knowing Tim’s whereabouts and we are working closely with them.”
She said police held grave concerns for anyone who went missing in circumstances that were out of character.
“Unfortunately with Tim, he didn’t have a significant digital footprint, which has really made it quite difficult for police to locate him, and we’ve had to rely heavily on information from the public and CCTV footage,” Detective Acting Inspector Quade said.
She said police do not know why Mr Lyons went missing but were investigating.
“We know in missing persons investigations that there a number of reasons that persons go missing,” she said.
“Sometimes voluntary, sometimes involuntary, and all of these form aspects of our investigation.
“But it’s too early in our investigation at this time to provide any further information in relation to that.”
Detective Inspector Quade has urged those in the Tuggeranong region to keep an eye out for Mr Lyons over the coming weekend when they are outdoors.
“We have Search and Rescue doing searches of that area, but there is quite an extensive scrub and green belt all through there, so it’s taking a lot of time,” she said.
“We are really hoping to reach out to the community for some assistance.
“We don’t have information at this point in time that has indicated that Tim was able to move a great distance, which is predominately why we are focusing on our search and rescue efforts in south Canberra.”
She thanked members of the public who had already reached out to police about his disappearance, saying they had provided a lot of assistance.
Mr Lyons is described as Caucasian in appearance, about 175 cm (5’8″) tall, with a slim build, fair complexion, close-cropped hair, a full black beard and green eyes.
He was possibly wearing a black t-shirt, black jeans and black boots and may have been carrying a leopard print faux mink blanket, a blue or green wool blanket, a pillow and sheets.
He also has a visible scar on his right eyebrow and a piercing at the top of his left ear.
In addition, police have released a CCTV image of a man they would like to speak to and are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying him. It is not believed this man is involved in Mr Lyons’ disappearance, but police would like to confirm his identity. This image is included in the above gallery.
