Don't want to hound you, but after a record DAS stay, can you give Rocky a home?

When it comes to the longest stay at Canberra’s Domestic Animal Services (DAS), Rocky takes the biscuit – as of Wednesday, 24 January, he’s been looking for a home for 307 days.

But it’s the sort of record you guess Rocky and his carers at DAS could well do without – everyone just wants him to find his forever home. The other long-stayer was Aero, who was there for 259 days. Aero found her forever home last year.

At about three years of age, the mixed breed Rocky is a favourite with staff for his happy personality, gentle nature and love for life. According to DAS Adoptions Coordinator Tara McMahon, his passions are people, other dogs, toys – and more toys.

“We honestly cannot understand why he hasn’t found a permanent home yet,” Tara said.

“He’s one of those dogs who has stood the test of time. Nothing seems to phase him,” she said.

“He loves his daily routine. He comes out in the morning to have breakfast, then maybe goes on the walk trail or plays with some of the other dogs. Then he goes back to his kennel and plays with his toys – and then he usually has an afternoon snooze. He really is the perfect boy.”

Rocky came to DAS as a stray almost a year ago with no microchip or any ID at all.

For a dog that hasn’t had the best start to life, Tara said Rocky takes everything in his stride – “just like the champ he is”.

Rocky’s perfect owner would be an active person or family who would make him part of their life.

“He loves to run around, he does laps of the running area and he loves swimming. Then he would love to come inside and be part of the family.

“We have tested him with other dogs and there has never been a problem.

“For us, it is just heartbreaking to see him here for so long, but we also have to make sure he goes to the right place because the worst thing would be for him to come back here again.”

Tara said she was confident his perfect family was out there, and although she, along with the other staff, would be sad when he eventually went, that would take a poor second to the fact he was going to the right place.

For the DAS team, their dream is for Rocky to find his permanent home before he reaches the unwanted record in March of 365 days in care.

“He deserves to be with the right person and we want to make sure he gets what he deserves,” Tara said.

She said the best way to see if Rocky is right for you is to visit him at DAS on Mugga Lane at Symonston. Opening hours are Monday to Friday from 10 am to 3 pm and Saturdays from 10 am to 2 pm.
