Hail Storm

It was a decent little hail storm last night, not a super cell like last year, but enough to do some damage and overflow the gutters.

Anyone see or hear about anything spectacular?

Well, so much for our storms. everyone else got them! And about 2.30 this arvo, it was looking promsing, except most of the action was in the southern sky, never a good look. For a really corker storm, you want to see a vast Wall’o’Grey forming mid afternoon all along the west.

Haha, thanks for the memories Skiddy.

If ant were Mark Carmody I would be very amused.
Especially given that Ant seemed to go weak at the knees for him in this thread.

Mark Carmody is a very bad example of weather enthusiasts…

Why, he can’t even interpret a storm glass properly.

I’d sure like that red jacket Mark Carmody was wearing the other night! It was so nice, he didn’t even stick a flower on it. (or leaves).

There was lightning to the SE about 7:30pm.

Send more rain !

There was a storm last night??

No hail in the inner north last night. We copped our fair share last year thanks.

Does anyone else think ant is Mark Carmody?

thanks weather nerd!!! :-p

so is it going to rain tomorrow? Cause the weather boobs said it was going to thunderstorm so i drove instead of riding to work, and it didn’t so they cost me $10 in parking. Grrr…

It might fester into something in the late afternoon, maybe. Weather’s tricky because now, it’s not behaving how it used to! A few years back, that system that just rolled through would have brought all the classic rain from the west we’re used to. But it didn’t. So best guess is “maybe”, but whether it’s late arvo or early evening, not sure.

Eric Althwaite was a boring little tit, but his mothers black puddings were so black even the white bits were black.
Gordon “golden Gordon” Ottershaw has assured me that lightning was clearly visible from Yass.
Ice and ice storms are about the sh*tiest form of weather I have had to deal with, clearing inch thick ice is very hard work. Thankfully not a problem around here though.

no hail down on the bright side, some heavy rain for about 5 minutes though.

Yes Ruff, it’s unusual, but not unheard-of. There’s a bunch of instability over us now, and a slow trough, which mixes things up. There’s a bit of moisture around (brought by that cloudage that rolled in from SA), and it’s been pretty warm. Sometimes it can be some cold air coming in and hitting a bunch of warm air, sometimes it’s a mixture of factors.

It’s truly weird to experience a thunderstorm at the snow! I’ve been in many, but you know it’s a very peculiar event. When I was in Northern Vermont during a shockingly cold winter, we had a mega-thunderstorm one night, and arrived at work the next day to find the whole bunny hill and front area incased in inches-thick ice, a lightning strike had hit the computerised controls for the snowmaking system, so water had been pumping out and then it froze.

Is it just me, or is this the wrong time of year to be getting thunderstoms? I remember them as a Spring/summer phenomenon, not late-autumn.

Nah, madman, but I’m a weather geek. I’m in to shovels, raingauges and precipitaaaation. (/Ernest Postlethwaite). I wish I was a photo geek becuase then I’d be able to capture some of those flashes. I got some beaut shots of those cells going up with the setting sun lighting them up, but I’m utterly crap at lightning.

Ant is correct – I’m well over to the west and the lightning show is absolutely spectacular!

ant-by any chance you would be a weatherman or such?

That was a pretty good speel as well as those lightning strikes have been happening!

well, the flashing on the eastern horizon is going full bore! The cells that built today are doing their thing. there’s flashing to our NE, East, and SE. Dunno if it’s visible from Canberra but it might be.

Lots of pea sized hail in Weetangera that went on for about 10 minutes last night. Was funny watching the neighbours running out to put blankets etc over their car!

Travelling yesterday arvo near Jerangle/Bredbo we copped a huge hailstorm…. got some great photos. The ground looked like snow! Was centralised for a few kilometres radius we reckon….. plenty of hail drifts on the Monaro Hwy on our way back!

There’s some amazing cells building to Canberra’s east and SE right now (over the great divide). Earlier there were some biggies going up to the south, and the radar shows them firing already (over the Tinderries and moving east). You might see some flashing on the eastern horizon tonight, these things are monsters! Like giant scoops of white icecream with dark grey bits in their cores.

They’ll move east. Can’t see much on our western horizon, especially the important NW bit. They should be showing about now if they were planning on coming. Then again, you never know.

Plenty of hail at my place, still some in the yard at 10am…
no damamge though…

what, there was a hail storm?

none in the kambah area, lightning was pretty good though.
