Park and ride gets perked up

Chief Minister Gallagher’s people have finally put online her tweaks to the Park and Ride system:

ACT Chief Minister and Minister for Territory and Municipal Services, Katy Gallagher, announced today that the Park and Ride permit system has been improved with additional permit sites, the introduction of a ‘city-wide’ permit and the development of designated permit parking areas.

“From Monday 2 July 2012, changes will be implemented to the Park and Ride permit system to improve accessibility to the service, which help reduce car only trips, which in turn alleviates traffic on our roads and pressure on our town centre parking,” the Chief Minister said.

“Two new permit areas have been established at Mawson and Mitchell to ensure that users of the Park and Ride service have more opportunities to get a car park and continue their journey via bus. Fifteen dedicated Park and Ride spaces have been allocated at the Mitchell site and 64 spaces at Mawson to assist with access.

“The new improvements will also see the introduction of a single ‘city-wide’ permit that can be used across Canberra’s five permit Park and Ride facilities, providing users with greater flexibility in their transport options,” the Chief Minister said.

And to make matters worse – you have to re-apply every month for your parking permit.

One step forward (Myway), two steps back (Park and ride admin).

This is crap.

According to the Park and Ride manager I spoke to – the additional permit spaces at Mawson are because they have handed out too many tickets at Woden and are getting daily compaints about no access to parking there. Action needed to be able to cover their bums as they can’t manage the system already in place.

So us poor users of the very simple carpark in Mawson now have to either have 90 bucks credit or a auto top up to be able to park in half of the Mawson carpark.

The opportunities have been there for months – nothing is stopping anyone from using them at the moment. And without any ticket system.

I fail to see how more paperwork and more of my money sitting an an Action account assists me. The system at Mawson isn’t broken and there is no need to fix it.

Another outright lie from our toy government.
