Rock music is often shunned in Canberra.
Our hipster/indie/scarf-wearing scene thrives, and you can’t navigate a Canberra music forum without reading want-ads for metal/thrash/death bands and performers constantly looking for each other. We’ve even got a hip-hop scene, I hear.
At this point, i was going to opine about the handful of local stalwarts that strive to keep the rock gods appeased in our fair city, but that would be rather onanistic, thus I’ll get on with the promo:
Melbourne rockers EMPRA (www.empraonline.com) are currently touring their debut album, and their no-compromise balls-to-the-wall rock show is going to light up The Basement on Saturday 14th July.
Their website gushes appropriately:
Combining the explosive energy of the Foo Fighters, the power-packed punch of Green Day and the boisterous fun of Weezer with a healthy dose of Australian hard rock attitude, Sanny Veloo (Lead Vocals/Guitar), Matt Agius (Bass), Matt Gault (Guitars/Backing Vocals) and Matt Cattanach (Drums) nail the in-your- face, rousing badass vibe that is EMPRA.
The album boasts some big names too:
EMPRA’s self-titled debut is produced by famed Melbourne rock producer Ricki Rae (Electric Mary). The album also features world famous musician Wally de Backer (Gotye), whose soaring keyboards and samples are heard on the heartfelt ballad ‘Sabrina’.
Have a listen to this rockalicious track, and tell me that this show won’t go off like a frog in a sock.
Entry is $10, at the door. EMPRA will be supported by The Glaciers and Toxicmen, with s*** getting real from 9.30pm.
