wattle

Out with the Kelpie of Few Accomplishments this afternoon I couldn’t help notice the wattle (ever a harbinger, if not of spring, then of the end of winter) is very much blooming.

And so once again dear reader we ask you to send in your pictures of this most Australian of flowering trees.

Email you pictures in to images@the-riotact.com and we’ll show them to the world.

Watson I think you are very much the winter person if you think that wattle comes out only after winter has just barely started.

You know Canberra has an average of around 90+ days with temps under 2 degrees each year – thats what I call a long winter, especially when (like this year) we seem to have already had well over 90 days with min temps under 2.

I can deal with the frost. Went for a morning walk last week when it was 2 degrees and did not feel cold without a coat. But that arctic wind we get in August and September is much harder to bear. I was wearing a coat this morning and was swearing because I realised I also needed a beanie, scarf and gloves to not feel like an iceblock. Hibernation doesn’t finish until daylight saving starts…

I am not a winter person at all, but it is one of the things that I love about Canberra winters. First we get those Japanese cherry tree blossoms just after the shortest day and soon after the wattles start reminding us of spring when winter seems to have barely started yet. I know it’s not the end of the cold weather, but the promise of warmer weather keeps me going.
