Bus and light rail travel will be free from 20 September when the transition to the new public transport ticketing system kicks off.

Transport Minister Chris Steel today (5 September) announced the switchover date to MyWay+, which is expected to take at least six weeks.

Mr Steel said that after significant progress over the past few months in the design, development and testing of the new MyWay+ system, installation could commence.

“This includes removing the existing MyWay equipment on board buses and installing the new MyWay+ validators both in buses and along the light rail alignment,” he said.

As well as the old MyWay system being switched off, the NXTBUS real-time systems will also no longer be available from Friday, 20 September.

This includes onboard buses, at bus stops and stations, and the SMS service, but timetable information will still be available online and at major stops and interchanges.

Next stop information will still be available for light rail, onboard and at stops.

Mr Steel said system testing would also take place with over 200 Canberrans providing feedback on the new system and its journey planning functionality.

Bus and light rail services will continue to operate as per the scheduled timetable and frequency, however people will not need to pay during the transition period to MyWay+.

“A fare-free travel period has been planned as part of a ‘hard switchover’ to the new MyWay+ system,” Mr Steel said.

“We made this decision early on to avoid confusion for the public of having two systems in different states of commissioning and decommissioning.”

He said the fare-free travel period, in which passengers would no longer need to tap on and off, would provide the community time to prepare for the change and encourage people to try bus and light rail travel as part of their daily commute.

Mr Steel urged Canberrans to register their existing MyWay card.

He said that in the past few weeks, several thousand cards had been registered, but there were still some unregistered cards.

“Registering your card only takes two minutes and will make it much easier for you to transfer your balance or request a refund once MyWay+ goes live in November,” Mr Steel said.

“We are about to enter a very exciting period for public transport in Canberra.

“MyWay+ will seamlessly integrate buses, light rail and real-time information to get you where you need to be. Powerful journey planning, live service updates and more ways to pay will put the power of public transport in your hands.”

The government says the easiest way to plan your trip is by using the Transport Canberra Journey Planner or referring to timetable information. Visit Transport Canberra for updates and further information.

‘Ride for free.’ I thought that had always been the case, as most bus drivers don’t seem to care if people pay. I don’t know why I bother paying. Like most things the Government (taxpayers) funds, there never seems to be any accountability.

dazzler,
I’m a frequent bus user and from what I’ve seen, drivers appear a bit annoyed when someone scams a free ride.

When was the last time you saw a Supervisor or Ticket Inspector on a bus?

I think the real issue is the government isn’t prepared to enforce it’s fare collection. If drivers are allowing free rides, there must be a directive to do so, otherwise they would lose their jobs.

They pulled the ticket inspectors when they pulled on board cash payment during covid.
The drivers are annoyed about the people scamming rides, some vocally so. They don’t mind as much if someone talks to them about it and have a reason they can’t pay (such as the bank transfer not hitting the card yet), but many of the cheaters are just ignoring the driver.

The problem is that most of the people scamming rides are high school students and they aren’t allowed to leave students on the side of the road.

Ride for free. I thought Steel already did as a MLA. No consequences for incompetence.

What? NXTBUS switched off? I rely on it several times a week.

I know … probably one of the most useful aspects of the MyWay system

Oh but wait. As per the article, ‘… timetable information will still be available online’. Woopity doo – if anly Steel get could his drivers to actually pay attention to the timetable.

Perhaps it will come back as he does mention “… live service updates …” in spruiking the new system. However, I wouldn’t hold your breath, marmalade – as we have seen on so many occasions with Steel, nearly everything (I’m happy to be corrected to just plain everything) he touches turns to sh*t.

I am a seasoned bus traveller but find the current Journey Planner is hopelessly inadequate. I frequently find myself going to timetables and doing my own planning to work out connections etc.

I truly hopes that the new Journey Planner on MyWay+ is actually smart enough to work.

As much as FREE travel can be seen as a bonus for commuters, it’s like everything else that is FREE; it’s NOT. Taxpayers will pick up the cost, and for FREE travel to be occurring during an election campaign, to me smells of the ACT Government taking us all, for a not so free ride.

Just in time for the election hey Steel! Wonder how much money you’ll waste this time.

Without NXTBUS operating those trialling public transport are not likely to have a good experience, as there will be little predictability regarding which bus will arrive next and when it will arrive. We know they don’t operate to the timetable so we rely on NXTBUS. This is going to be a frustrating time.

@psycho
Totally agree. I only ever use NXTBUS, as the timetable is not reliable for anything. The drivers don’t give a sh*t about it; it’s very rare to have a driver hold at a waypoint because they know they are early.

Not sure if I can spruik apps or not but I use an app called AnyTrip. It’s free and works pretty well for seeing where the bus is at. It’s based on GPS movements, I think, which are a bit static and lag a bit but works well if you are already at the bus stop and just need to see how far away the bus is.

@Paul Nugent
Thank you for pointing out the app. However, it seems like it’s the same as NXTBUS SMS service, which I currently use at the bus stop.

You’d think Ian Bushnell might also have the journalistic skills to mention the long long delays, failures and restarts for the project.
Even just a short sentence amongst his usual rehashing of an ACT Government media release.

Good god – did this happen in the big cities when they changed to a new system?

It seems our public transport is also moving barrels and barrels filled with pork.

Just in time for the election. Using taxpayer money to self promote themselves. Labor have no shame.

New ticketing system has long been in making because MyWay uses old 3G mobile network which is phased out in October. They did not have to wait till last week if there was no election. It is a great example of turning new ticketing system project delay into free ride election stunt.
