Our Brave Leader, never one to shy away from a dodgy Key Performance Indicator, has put out a media release with the amazing headline “SUPREME COURT IMPROVES PERFORMANCE”. (It’s also nice that the Chief Minister’s office is letting we common folk view his media releases even if it is on a 3 day delay)
The ACT Supreme Court now finalised 82 per cent of its criminal matters in less than a year, compared to a national average of 80 per cent. Of these matters, six out of 10 were finalised in less than six months.
The report also showed that in 2003-04 the Supreme Court imposed custodial sentences in 83 per cent of cases where the defendant was proven guilty, up from 67 per cent in the 2002-03 year. The comparable national averages were 78 per cent in 2003-04 and 55 per cent in 2002-03.
No qualitative examination of course. But hey, the raw statistics look good, and who is to deny a mighty Chief Minister anything?
