When JJ, a local Snowy Monaro resident, first noticed a swelling under his jaw, he assumed it could be handled locally with a few antibiotics and a visit to the dentist.
But, as the symptoms rapidly escalated, JJ found himself in an ambulance, bound for the emergency department at Canberra Hospital. What he initially thought was a minor dental issue turned into a major health battle.
“I was confused and anxious,” JJ recalls. “By the time I arrived at Canberra Hospital, my breathing was starting to block.
“They told me I needed emergency surgery, or it could lead to more complications and possibly sepsis. I was scared but relieved they could do something right away.”
Approximately 200,000 residents of southern NSW rely on Canberra’s advanced medical services each year, highlighting the essential connection between Canberra Hospital and the surrounding regional communities.
Stories like JJ’s are a powerful reminder of just how important this relationship is.
This year, that bond grows even stronger with the new partnership between the Canberra Hospital Foundation and the Queanbeyan Show.
As the show’s chosen charity partner for 2024, Canberra Hospital Foundation will be the focus of fundraising efforts, reinforcing the shared commitment to keeping life-saving healthcare accessible for those who need it most.
Canberra Hospital Foundation CEO Helen Falla says they are grateful for the partnership.
“Around 30 per cent of the patients cared for at Canberra Hospital come from southern NSW,” Helen says.
“These are people’s mothers, fathers, children and loved ones who rely on our healthcare system during their most difficult moments.
“Whether it’s rushing someone to the hospital after a life-changing moment, either through an accident or supporting a patient through cancer treatment, this partnership will help sustain the life-saving care that is available when it’s needed most.
“Together, we are making sure that every person and family in our region has the best chance at recovery and a healthy future.”

The funds raised through this partnership will directly support CHF’s mission to enhance patient care and well-being. From cutting-edge equipment to calming patient spaces for families that aid in mental recovery, CHF ensures that patients and families find comfort and support when facing health crises.
These enhancements, JJ says, made all the difference during his treatment.
“I can’t thank the staff enough,” JJ says.
“The medical teams were constantly there, explaining everything that was happening, even when I couldn’t remember.
“They were patient with my questions, but it was the outdoor patient family areas, with fresh air and sunlight, that helped me regain some sanity after days of being disoriented.
“It was so much nicer when family visited, too – not being stuck beside my bed but having some peaceful space outdoors.”

“I’m grateful this care was available so quickly. I really don’t know what would have happened to me otherwise.”
