The Deck at Snapper & Co, located at the Canberra Southern Cross Yacht Club, has announced a series of tea events that are guaranteed to make this summer one to remember.

Taking place on selected Fridays throughout summer, the Tipsy Tea takes full advantage of the lakefront location of The Deck.

“Tipsy Tea is a unique and indulgent experience that combines the charm of a traditional high tea with a playful, modern twist. With a relaxed yet refined atmosphere, Tipsy Tea offers the perfect setting to unwind with friends on a Friday afternoon or celebrate a special occasion. This event promises a delightful fusion of fun and flavour, and we’re thrilled to be hosting it at Snapper & Co,” says Kristen Allen, General Manager of Marketing and Communications.

Being partial to a Friday afternoon early knockoff and cheeky drinks, I went along to test the theory: is afternoon tea better with bottomless beverages?

Upon arriving at the deck, the promise of ‘tipsy’ is immediately gratified as attentive servers pour deep glasses of De Bortoli Prosecco. If bottomless bubbles aren’t enough, the table is adorned with three decanters of cocktails, which include Lemon Drop Martini, Pink Gin Spritz and Chamomile Paloma.

At $115 a head for non-members and $95 a head for members of the club, the beverages are generous, and with the event spanning two hours from 3 pm until 5 pm, there is plenty of opportunity to take full advantage of all that’s on offer. It only took me around an hour to decide, “Yes, afternoon tea is better with bottomless beverages!”

I had noted that the event was called tea and not high tea, which would account for the lack of personal dessert towers, but in their place was a bountiful buffet of sweet and savoury treats set in front of a stunning mural wall.

A spread of traditional crustless finger sandwiches formed the savoury part of the spread. Flavours included the classic tea choice of cucumber sandwiches as well as smoked salmon with dill, devilled egg with chive and coronation chicken, in which chicken is mixed with curry powder and mayo.

The sweets were a mix of cakes, slices and tarts, including a mini lemon meringue tart, which was the highlight for me with its extra light and fluffy Swiss meringue topping.

And afternoon tea wouldn’t be complete without scones with jam and cream. The benefit of having these served buffet style, apart from being able to eat as many as you please, is being able to serve your perfect quantity of jam and cream. It’s always a pet peeve of mine when there isn’t enough jam and cream, so naturally, I went to town on this one.

Delightful desserts and bottomless bubbles aside, the location, with 180-degree lakeside views in an open bush setting, is one of the most stunning in Canberra.

Opening in 2022, The Deck was added to the rear of the Southern Cross Yacht Club to form an open-air eating area for the well-loved fish and chip venue Snapper and Co.

At the same time that The Deck was built, Snapper and Co undertook a major renovation and now features a large indoor eating space and an expanded menu that includes seafood platters, salads, pizzas and burgers, plus a weekend brunch menu.

Upcoming Tipsy Tea dates are Friday, 6 December, Friday, 3 January and Friday, 7 February. Bookings can be made at Snapper & Co.
