A sprawling five-bedroom, six-bathroom Hamptons-style home in Weetangera has won Canberra builder Classic Constructions top honours from the 2024 Housing Industry Association (HIA) in the ACT & Southern NSW Awards.
Exuding elegance and sophistication, it was named Home of the Year, and Custom Built Home of the Year for homes over $2 million.
The HIA listing says the home showcases a harmonious blend of classic charm and modern luxury, featuring a tennis court, pool, spa, and a golf putting green.
The interior boasts meticulous craftsmanship, with stunning details like coffered ceilings, decorative mouldings, and custom joinery.
“A standout feature is the bespoke Venetian plaster rangehood in the kitchen, complemented by beautifully crafted timber fireplace mantels throughout,” it says.
“Light floods the open spaces through large UPVC windows, the thoughtful integration of materials, such as Colorbond and Monier Cambridge roof tiles, ensures both beauty and practicality, while the layout balances informal living with sophisticated entertaining areas.”
Classic Constructions director Jason Tanchevski said the award was humbling and validated all the hard work that went into the home.
“It’s not the first time we’ve won the home of the year award in the ACT but it doesn’t get any less exciting,” he said.
The home took two years to complete, interrupted as it was by the pandemic and the associated supply chain issues.
“That just adds to the challenge of building such a home and a highly detailed home, but also makes it even more satisfying,” Mr Tanchevski said.
The clients already had an architectural concept but needed a builder they could work closely with to bring their vision to fruition.
Introduced by mutual friends, the clients and Classic Constructions developed a trusted relationship throughout the build.
“Emma, the owner, has a design background, so she was involved with a lot of the actual intricate design specification of the house,” Mr Tanchevski said.
He said the owners were ecstatic with the result. “There was tears and excitement and lots of celebrating, which was just made it all worthwhile,” he said.
The home had many specialised elements, specifications, different materials, and lots of joinery which made it complex and challenging to build.
“There were a lot of different facets to it,” Mr Tanchevski said.
“It was very detailed and very custom … challenging but pretty exciting at the same time.”
HIA ACT and Southern NSW executive director Greg Weller said Classic Constructions was a family-owned business that had been building quality homes for four decades.
“This is a remarkable example of the exceptional quality and workmanship being done in the ACT and Southern NSW region and is a great testament to Classic Constructions,” he said.
In other awards, the Apprentice of the Year was Benjamin Kozak, from Hardwick Projects in Canberra.
“Ben is a skilled carpenter, who draws on his family’s trade background and the strong ethical values instilled by his mentors. He is currently also studying a Certificate IV in Building and Construction with aspirations to launch his own building company,” said Mr Weller.
“Not only is Ben showing he has the practical skills needed onsite, but his coursework results through the Canberra Institute of Technology are equally impressive.”
The People’s Choice Home award as voted by members of the public, was won by Reardon Building Group from Goulburn.
Reardon Building Group also took out the Custom Built Home Category $900,000 to $1.1m for the same property.
The ACT and Southern NSW regional awards take in entries from the South Coast, Riverina, Southern Tablelands, Southwest Slopes, Snowy Mountains and Canberra.
The winners will now advance to the 2025 national HIA awards.
